Karin Roßley
Karin Roßley, (née Regel, born 5 April 1957) is a retired East German hurdler, who represented the sports team SC Cottbus. She was born in Cottbus. She won the bronze medal at the 1978 European Championships. Roßley set two world records during her career: 55.63 seconds in August 1977 in Helsinki and 54.28 seconds in May 1980 in Jena. The latter stood for three years until Anna Ambrazienė ran in 54.02 seconds in Moscow. 400 Metre Hurdles
The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women. On a standard outdoor track, 400 metres is the length of the inside lane, once around the stadium. Runners stay in their lanes the entire way after starting out of the blocks and must clear ten hurdles that are evenly spaced around the track. The hurdles are positioned and weighted so that they fall forward if bumped into with sufficient force, to prevent injury to the runners. Although there is no longer any penalty for knocking hurdles over, runners prefer to clear them cleanly, as touching them during the race slows runners down. The best male athletes can run the 400 m hurdles in a time of around 46 seconds, while the very best female athletes achieve a time of around 51 seconds. Marina Ivanovna Stepanova (née Makeyeva (russian: Марина Ивановна Степанова-Макеева) born 1 May 1950) is a Russian former athlete who competed for the Soviet Union in the 400 metres hurdles, and became the first woman to run under 53 seconds for the event, when she ran 52.94 secs in 1986. Career Born in Meglevo, Imeni Sverdlova, Stepanova started to compete internationally in 1978 at the European Championships in Prague where she finished sixth in her semifinal heat. That year she had a PB of 56.19 seconds in the 400m hurdles. In 1979 she broke the world record for the first time, running 54.78 seconds at the Soviet Spartakiad, defeating previous world record holder Tatyana Zelentsova. Gudrun Maria Abt (born 3 August 1962) is a retired German hurdler. She was born in Riedlingen. Biography At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul she finished sixth in 400 m hurdles in a personal best time of 54.04 seconds. This ranks her fifth among German 400 m hurdlers, behind Sabine Busch, Cornelia Ullrich, Ellen Fiedler and Heike Meißner.
