Karin Månsdotter (film)
''Karin Månsdotter'' is a 1954 Swedish historical drama film directed by Alf Sjöberg. It is based on the play ''Erik XIV'' by August Strindberg. Plot Karin Mansdotter is the daughter of an ordinary soldier. Still King Erik of Sweden falls madly in love with her. This turn of fate is appreciated by his adviser Göran Persson because he lives in constant fear the nobles could find a way to increase their influence on the king. When Erik's plan to marry English princess Elizabeth Tudor fails, Persson condones Erik's decision to make Karin his Queen. The Swedish nobility resents this wedding. The isolated King eventually shows signs of distress which are used against him. In the end he is dethroned and replaced by his brother while Persson gets decapitated for treason. Alf Sjöberg
Sven Erik Alf Sjöberg (21 June 1903 – 17 April 1980) was a Swedish theatre and film director. He won the Grand Prix du Festival at the Cannes Film Festival twice: in 1946 for '' Torment'' ( sv, Hets) (part of an eleven-way tie), and in 1951 for his film ''Miss Julie'' ( sv, Fröken Julie) (an adaptation of August Strindberg's play which tied with Vittorio De Sica's ''Miracle in Milan''). Despite his success with those films, Sjöberg was foremost a stage director, perhaps the greatest at Dramaten (alongside first Olof Molander and later Ingmar Bergman). He was a First Director of Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre between 1930 and 1980; he staged there many remarkable and historic productions. Sjöberg was also a pioneer director of drama for early Swedish TV (his 1955 TV production of ''Hamlet'' is a national milestone). Agda Persdotter (died after 1565) also known as ''Agda i Porten'' ('Agda of the Gate'), was the official royal mistress of the future King Eric XIV of Sweden during his time as a Crown Prince in 1558-61, and possibly informally in 1563-65. Birgitta Valberg (16 December 1916 – 29 March 2014) was a Swedish actress. She was best known for her work in several Ingmar Bergman films made over a 30-year period, including the Bergman produced ''Paradise Place'' (1977). For her role in this film, which was directed by Gunnel Lindblom, another member of Bergman's repertory company, she won the award for Best Actress at the 13th Guldbagge Awards.
