The Kargat (russian: Каргат) is a river in Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia. It is a right tributary of the Chulym. The Kargat is in length, with a drainage basin of . Course The river begins in the southern sections of the Vasyugan Swamp, at above sea level and flows in a southwesterly direction over the Baraba Steppe, before flowing into the Chulym River at an elevation of . A significant part of its waters either evaporates or is infiltrated in the ground, and the average discharge at the village of Nizhny Kargat, from its mouth, is just . In its lower reaches the river is some wide and deep, with a flow rate of . The Kargat has no major tributaries. In its middle course is the town of Kargat, named after the river. Lake Chany (russian: озеро Чаны) is a lake in Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia. The lake extends across five districts of Novosibirsk Oblast: Zdvinsky, Barabinsky, Chanovsky, Kupinsky and Chistoozyorny. A drainage basin is an area of land where all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Vasyugan Swamp
The Vasyugan Swamp () is the largest swamp in the northern hemisphere as well as the largest peatland in the world. It is located in Russia, in southwestern Siberia. The swamp is a major reservoir of fresh water for the region, and the Vasyugan river has its source there. It is home to a number of endangered species which is a concern among local environmentalists as the production of oil and gas has become a major industry in the region. Baraba Steppe
The Baraba steppe or Baraba Lowland (), is a plain in western Siberia. The Baraba Lowland is an important Russian agricultural region. Geography It stretches for across the Omsk and Novosibirsk oblasts between the Irtysh and the Ob Rivers. Grassland steppe landscapes predominate, as well as sphagnum bogs and Solonchak grounds, although there are remnants of wooded areas. Barabinsk is the largest city in the lowland. Lakes Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan and Tandovo, are located in the Baraba steppe. The Kulunda Plain extends to the southeast. The border between both areas is not well defined.
