It is currently divided between northwestern Russia (specifically the federal subjects of the Republic of Karelia and Leningrad Oblast) and Finland (the regions of South Karelia, North Karelia, and the eastern portion of modern-day Kymenlaakso). Use of name Various subdivisions may be called Karelia. Finnish Karelia was a historical province of Finland, and is now divided between Finland and Russia, often called just ''Karjala'' in Finnish. Karelians
Karelians ( krl, karjalaižet, karjalazet, karjalaiset, Finnish: , sv, kareler, karelare, russian: Карелы) are a Finnic ethnic group who are indigenous to the historical region of Karelia, which is today split between Finland and Russia. Karelians living in Russian Karelia are considered a distinct ethnic group closely related to Finnish Karelians, who are considered a subset of Finns. This distinction historically arose from Karelia having been fought over and eventually split between Sweden and Novgorod, resulting in Karelians being under different cultural spheres. In Russia, Karelians mostly live in the Republic of Karelia, where they are the designated ethnic group, and in other adjacent north-western parts of the country. They traditionally speak the Karelian language and are Eastern Orthodox Christians. There are also significant Karelian enclaves in the Tver and Novgorod oblasts, as some Karelians migrated to those areas after the Russo-Swedish War of 1656-16 ...

Karelians (Finns)
Karelians (Finnish language, Finnish: ''karjalaiset''), also known as Finnish Karelians or Karelian Finns, are a subgroup (''heimo'') of the Finnish people, traditionally living in Karelia (historical province of Finland), Finnish Karelia. A portion of Finnish Karelia was ceded to the Soviet Union following the Winter War. The portion still in Finland comprises the regions of Finland, regions of North Karelia, South Karelia, and eastern Kymenlaakso (east of the Kymi (river), Kymi River). Over 400,000 Karelians were evacuated to other parts of Finland following the cession, and their descendants are now spread across the country, many still maintaining Karelian identities. Karelians speak eastern dialects of Finnish: in South Karelia and, historically, the Karelian Isthmus the South Karelian dialects are spoken, while the dialects spoken in North Karelia are part of the Savonian dialects. Karelians are traditionally Lutheranism, Lutheran Christians. Eastern Kymenlaakso belongs to t ...

Karelian Language
Karelian (North Karelian and Livvi Karelian: ; Ludic: ; Tver Karelian: ) is a Finnic language spoken mainly in the Russian Republic of Karelia. Linguistically, Karelian is closely related to the Finnish dialects spoken in eastern Finland, and some Finnish linguists have even classified Karelian as a dialect of Finnish, though in the modern day it is widely considered a separate language. Karelian is not to be confused with the Southeastern dialects of Finnish, sometimes referred to as ("Karelian dialects") in Finland. There is no single standard Karelian language. Each writer writes in Karelian according to their own dialectal form. Three main written standards have been developed, for North Karelian, Olonets Karelian (also known as Livvi Karelian) and Tver Karelian. Ludic Karelian also appears in writing. All variants are written with the Latin-based Karelian alphabet, though the Cyrillic script has been used in the past. Classification Karelian belongs to the Finnic branch ...
