Karel Šimůnek (31 August 1869 in Beroun – 19 July 1942 in Prague) was a Czech watercolorist and illustrator, and a designer of posters and of theatrical sets. The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. Maximilian Pirner
Maximilian Pirner ( cs, Maxmilián Pirner; 13 February 1853 in Sušice – 2 April 1924 in Prague) was a Czech painter. He was a member of the Vienna Secession, and associated with the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. Life and work He was enrolled from 1872 to 1874 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague and from 1875 to 1879 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he studied with his countryman, Josef Matyáš Trenkwald. He remained in Vienna until 1887, although he was not an active participant in the local artistic community. At that time, he became a teacher at the Academy in Prague and was named a Professor there in 1896. Pirner's usual themes were classical mythology (such as his ''Medusa'' (1891) and ''Hecate'' (or ''Hekate'') (1901)) and the macabre (such as ''Sleepwalker'' (or ''Girl in Her Nightie Walks on the Window-Ledge'') (1878), ''Daemon Love'' (1893), and ''Allegory of Death'' (1895)). Beroun
Beroun (; german: Beraun) is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 20,000 inhabitants. It lies at the confluence of the Berounka and Litavka rivers. Beroun creates a conurbation with Králův Dvůr, former part of Beroun. The town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone. Václav Brožík (french: Vaclav de Brozik ; 6 March 1851, Třemošná – 15 April 1901 Paris) was a Czech painter who worked in the academic style. Life He came from a poor family, studying lithography and porcelain painting through apprenticeships. Beginning in 1868, with financial assistance from a local landowner, he was able to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He made a trip to the Netherlands, where he studied the Old Masters, then settled in Paris (despite not being able to speak French), where a letter of recommendation assured him the support of Jaroslav Čermák.
