Karel Eykman
Karel Eykman (1 March 1936 – 30 August 2022) was a Dutch writer of children's literature. Early life Eykman started studying theology in 1956. Career In 1969, Eykman published his first book ''De werksters van half vijf en andere gelijkenissen''. He won the Zilveren Griffel award in 1975 for his book ''De vreselijk verlegen vogelverschrikker''. In 1984, he won the Gouden Griffel award for his book ''Liefdesverdriet''. In the seventies of the twentieth century he was also a member of ''Het Schrijverscollectief'', a group of writers which included Eykman, Willem Wilmink, Hans Dorrestijn, Ries Moonen, Jan Riem and Fetze Pijlman. Together they contributed to television shows such as ''De Stratemakeropzeeshow'' and '' De film van Ome Willem''. In 1986, he published the book ''De zaak Jan Steen'' which was the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk during the Boekenweek that year. Many of his books were published by Uitgeverij De Harmonie. Gouden Griffel
The Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) is an award given to authors of children's or teenagers' literature in the Netherlands. History Since 1971, it is awarded each year during the Dutch Children's Books Week, by the Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Dutch Book Promotion Society) for the best children's books written in the past year. Between 1954 and 1970, one book per year was declared the "children's book of the year". Since then, ''griffels'' are awarded in several categories. Only novels written in Dutch are eligible for the ''gouden griffel''. However, the runner-up awards (Silver ''griffels'') can also be given to translated works. Aside from these, the ''Gouden Penseel'' (golden paintbrush) is awarded to the best illustrated children's books (with silver ''penseel'' as a runner-up), and since 1997 the Gouden Zoen (golden kiss, with silver as a runner-up) is awarded to the best books for teenagers. Amstelveen
Amstelveen () is a municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands with a population of 92.353 as of 2022. It is a suburban part of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The municipality of Amstelveen consists of the historical villages of Bovenkerk and Nes aan de Amstel. De Harmonie is a Dutch publishing company best known today as the publisher of the Harry Potter series of books since the 1990s, though their largest success didn't come until the 2000s and since 14 February 2008 they are located on Herengracht in Amsterdam. The company was founded in 1972 by Jaco Groot and his wife Elisabeth, and publishes 30-40 new titles per year, mostly visually-oriented material such as illustrated children's books, comics and art books, but also poetry and prose. Boekenweek
In the Netherlands, the Boekenweek (; English: Book Week) is an annual "week" of ten days dedicated to Dutch literature. It has been held in March annually since 1932. Each Boekenweek has a theme. The beginning of the Boekenweek is marked by the ''Boekenbal'' (''book ball''), a gathering that is attended by writers and publishers. Events are held across the country during the Boekenweek, such as book signing sessions, literary festivals and debates. Publications Each year a well-known writer, usually Dutch or Flemish, is asked to write a book, usually a novella, called the ''Boekenweekgeschenk'' (''book week gift''), which is to be given away during the festival. Book shops give a copy of the Boekenweekgeschenk when a customer buys a book in the Dutch language; libraries also give copies of these books when a new person becomes a member. Digital Library For Dutch Literature
The Digital Library for Dutch Literature (Dutch: Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren or DBNL) is a website (showing the abbreviation as dbnl) about Dutch language and Dutch literature. It contains thousands of literary texts, secondary literature and additional information, like biographies, portrayals etcetera, and hyperlinks. The DBNL is an initiative by the DBNL foundation that was founded in 1999 by the Society of Dutch Literature (Dutch: Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde). Building of the DNBL was made possible by donations, among others, from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek or NWO) and the Nederlandse Taalunie. From 2008 to 2012, the editor was René van Stipriaan. The work is done by eight people in Leiden (as of 2013: The Hague), 20 students, and 50 people in the Philippines who scan and type the texts. ''De Stratemakeropzeeshow'' (English: ''The road worker at sea show'') was a Dutch children's television programme that ran from 1972 to 1974 and was aired by the VARA broadcasting organization. ''De Stratemakeropzeeshow'' is regarded as one of the finest Dutch children's television shows for its absurdist and taboo-breaking sketches. The show was regarded controversial because it tackled topics what were then considered not morally acceptable and for its song "Poop and Pee Minuet". After the death of Aart Staartjes in early 2020, television critics argued that the programme had forever changed Dutch children's television, freeing the genre of adult morals. History The show aired at a time when Dutch children's television was changing. The previous generation watched Annie M. G.
