Karama, Northern Territory
Karama is a northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History The suburb of Karama is named after an Aboriginal tribe. Karama is an established residential area in Darwin's northern suburbs built in the period from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. The suburb is predominantly made up of residents of low socioeconomic status, with many homes being government housing. In 1964, Douglas Lockwood recommended that a number of tribal names be used for the suburbs of Darwin. The suburbs Karama was listed. Present day Some major features of the area include the Karama Primary School, Manunda Terrace Primary School, Holy Family Primary School, O’Loughlin Secondary College and Karama Shopping Plaza. SS Gothenburg
SS ''Gothenburg'' was an iron-hulled sail- and steamship that was built in England in 1854 and sailed between England and Sweden until 1862. She then moved to Australia, where she operated across the Tasman Sea to and from New Zealand until 1873, when she was rebuilt. After her rebuild, she operated in the Australian coastal trade. In February 1875 ''Gothenburg'' was wrecked in a storm on the Great Barrier Reef off the north coast of Queensland. 22 people survived in three lifeboats. A fireman, stoker or watertender is a person whose occupation it is to tend the fire for the running of a boiler, heating a building, or powering a steam engine. Much of the job is hard physical labor, such as shoveling fuel, typically coal, into the boiler's firebox. Douglas Lockwood
Douglas Wright Lockwood (9 July 1918 – 21 December 1980) was an Australian newspaperman and author. Born in Natimuk, west of Horsham in Victoria's Wimmera district, Lockwood left school at 12 to help run his father's (Alfred Wright Lockwood) newspaper, the weekly ''West Wimmera Mail'', at the height of the Great Depression. With his father's blessing he left home at 16 and worked as a reporter on rural Victorian papers in Camperdown, Tatura and Mildura before being hired by Sir Keith Murdoch in 1941 as a journalist on '' The Herald'' in Melbourne. He stayed with ''The Herald's'' parent company, the Herald and Weekly Times (HWT), for the rest of his life. He also broke the Petrov affair. At the end of 1941, during World War II, he was sent to Darwin with his new wife, Ruth (née Hay), and was there for the first Japanese attack on Australia on 19 February 1942.
