Karaiyamputhur serves as a gateway to Puducherry - Panruti route. It lies on the southwesternmost tip of Puducherry district. Toponymy The name Karaiyamputhur means new settlement on the banks of a river. Here the karai (banks) refers to Pennaiyar River banks. The South Pennar River (also known as ''Dakshina Pinakini'' in Kannada and ''Thenpennai or Ponnaiyar'' or ''Pennaiyar'' in Tamil) is a river in India. The Puducherry district, also known by its former name Pondicherry district, is one of the four districts of the union territory of Puducherry in South India.
