Kansas City Southern Depot (Leesville, Louisiana)
The Kansas City Southern Depot, now the Museum of West Louisiana, is a former railway station in Leesville, Louisiana. It was built by the Kansas City Southern Railway in 1916. It served as a combination of passenger station, freight station, and crew change point. The station was a busy shipping point during the Vernon Parish lumber boom in the early part of the 1900s. A local KCS train served the station into the 1960s. The building was donated to Vernon Parish on May 20, 1982. It is part of the Fort Johnson South, Louisiana, Fort Johnson South micropolitan area and is additionally served by the Leesville Airport. Kansas City Southern Railway
The Kansas City Southern Railway Company is an American Class I railroad. Founded in 1887, it operated in 10 Midwestern United States, Midwestern and Southeastern United States, Southeastern U.S. states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. KCS owned the shortest north-south rail route between Kansas City, Missouri, and several key ports along the Gulf of Mexico. Vernon Parish (French: ''Paroisse de Vernon'') is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 48,750. The parish seat and most populous municipality is Leesville. Bordered on the west by the Sabine River, the parish was founded in 1871 during the Reconstruction era. It was long a center of the timber industry, which harvested pine in the hills and bottomland hardwoods. Construction of a railway to the area in 1897 stimulated the marketing of lumber and businesses in the area. Since World War II, Fort Johnson, formerly Fort Polk, has been most important to the parish economy. The population of the Leesville area rapidly increased fivefold after the fort was opened.
