Kanowna Road District
The Kanowna Road District was an early form of local government area on the Western Australian goldfields. Kanowna, Western Australia
Kanowna is a ghost town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, about east of Kalgoorlie. It is sited on Maduwongga tribal lands. At the 2016 census, Kanowna had a population of 10 people. After the discovery of gold in the area in 1893, the townsite was gazetted in 1894. and the population grew from 2,500 in 1897 to over 12,500 by 1899. However, the alluvial gold supply was rapidly exhausted and underground mines following the outcropping vein produced decreasing amounts of gold, resulting in a slow but steady decrease in the population. The railway station was closed during the Great Depression, and by 1953 the town had been abandoned. The railway station platform, two cemeteries and mine workings are all that is left of the original town of Kanowna. Signs erected by the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society mark the sites of significant buildings. Shire Of Menzies
The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia located to the north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Kookynie Road District merged into the Menzies Road District in mid-1918. Shire Of Boulder
The Shire of Boulder was a local government area in Western Australia. It was established as the East Coolgardie Road District on 15 February 1895. It was renamed the Kalgoorlie Road District on 24 September 1897. The board's offices were located at 39 Porter Street, Kalgoorlie; the building survives today and has been classified by the National Trust of Australia. It expanded significantly over subsequent decades as it absorbed abolished road districts in the region, absorbing the Bulong Road District on 9 June 1911, the Broad Arrow Road District on 7 July 1922 and the Kanowna Road District on 15 September 1922. It was declared a shire and named the Shire of Kalgoorlie with effect from 1 July 1961 following the passage of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires.
