Leo Kanner (; born Chaskel Leib Kanner; June 13, 1894 – April 3, 1981) was an Austrian-American psychiatrist, physician, and social activist best known for his work related to autism spectrum disorder. Before working at the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Kanner practiced as a physician in Germany and South Dakota. In 1943, Kanner published his landmark paper ''Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact'', describing 11 children who displayed "a powerful desire for aloneness" and "an obsessive insistence on persistent sameness." He named their condition "early infantile autism," which is now known as autism spectrum disorder. Kanner was in charge of developing the first child psychiatry clinic in the United States and later served as the ''Chief of Child Psychiatry'' at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Alexis Kanner (born Henri Alex Kanner; 2 May 1942 – 13 December 2003) was a French born-Canadian film and television actor, based in England. His most notable role was the " Living in Harmony" episode of ''The Prisoner''. Biography Henri Alex Kanner was born in Nazi-occupied Bagnères-de-Luchon, France, to a Jewish family. In April 1944, shortly before his second birthday, he escaped with his family to Montreal, Canada, on the Portuguese ship ''Serpa Pinto''. Kanner attended the Montreal Children's Theatre under the tutelage of Dorothy Davis and Violet Walters. Heinrich Kanner (November 9, 1864 – February 15, 1930) was an Austrian author, journalist and newspaper editor. Heinrich Kanner attended high school and studied at the University in Vienna. Initially, he was a correspondent for the "Frankfurter Zeitung" in Vienna. In 1894, Kanner founded together with the economist Isidore Singer, and the writer Hermann Bahr, the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit". What "Die Zeit" differed from all that time in Austria-Hungary, published liberal newspapers, was the deviation from the foreign policy of the German-Austrian alliance. Employees of "Die Zeit" were people like Bertha von Suttner, Theodor Herzl, Thomas G. Masaryk, Felix Salten and Anton Wildgans.
