Kangaamiut Dike Swarm
The Kangaamiut dike swarm (old spelling: ''Kangâmiut'') is a 2.04 billion year old dike swarm located in the Qeqqata region of western Greenland. The dikes cut Archean orthogneisses and are exposed along approximately of the coast and a similar distance up to the inland ice to the east, covering an area of about . To the north it is bounded by the paleoproterozoic Ikertooq shear zone (old spelling: ''Ikertôq'') while to the south the boundary is gradational with a gradual reduction in the density of dikes. The dike swarm was intruded during a phase of extensional tectonics. A dike swarm (American spelling) or dyke swarm (British spelling) is a large geological structure consisting of a major group of parallel, linear, or radially oriented magmatic dikes intruded within continental crust or central volcanoes in rift zones. Examples exist in Iceland and near other large volcanoes, (stratovolcanoes, calderas, shield volcanoes and other fissure systems) around the world. They consist of several to hundreds of dikes emplaced more or less contemporaneously during a single intrusive event, are magmatic and stratigraphic, and may form a large igneous province. Qeqqata
Qeqqata (, da, Centrum, lit=Centre) is a municipality in western Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. The municipality was named after its location in the central-western part of the country. Its population is 9,378 as of January 2020. The administrative center of the municipality is in Sisimiut (formerly called Holsteinsborg). Creation It consists of the previously unincorporated area of Kangerlussuaq, as well as two former municipalities of western Greenland, Maniitsoq and Sisimiut. Shear Zone
In geology, a shear zone is a thin zone within the Earth's crust or upper mantle that has been strongly deformed, due to the walls of rock on either side of the zone slipping past each other. In the upper crust, where rock is brittle, the shear zone takes the form of a fracture called a Fault (geology), fault. In the lower crust and mantle, the extreme conditions of pressure and temperature make the rock ductile. Nagssugtoqidian Orogeny
The Nagssugtoqidian orogeny was a late Paleoproterozoic mountain-building event that affected Greenland during the period 1.91 to 1.77 Ga. The orogenic belt formed during this event marks the northern boundary of the mainly Archaean North Atlantic Craton.
