Kang G. Shin
Kang Geun Shin is a South Korean-born computer scientist and the Kevin and Nancy O'Connor Professor of Computer Science in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Michigan. He is also the founding director of the Real-Time Computing Laboratory (RTCL). He is known for his contributions to the field of real-time fault-tolerant systems. Shin is a recipient of the Korean Ho-Am Prize in Engineering. This prize is awarded for the "outstanding contributions to the development of science and culture and enhancement of the welfare of mankind". Tarek Abdelzaher
Tarek Farouk A. Abdelzaher is an Egyptian-born computer scientist. Abdelzaher earned bachelor's and master's degrees in at computer and electrical engineering at Ain Shams University, followed by a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1999, advised by Kang G. Shin. He is the Sohaib and Sara Abbasi Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois. Abdelzaher was chief editor of the ''Journal of Real-Time Systems'' for twenty years. Ho-Am Prize
The ''Ho-Am Prize'' (호암상, 湖岩賞, literally ''lake and rock award'') is a Korean annual award presented to "domestic/abroad ethnic Korean who have made outstanding contributions to the development of science and culture and enhancement of the welfare of mankind". Starting in 1991, it is funded by Samsung and named after their former chairman, Lee Byung-chul (Ho-Am is his pen name which means ''filling up a space with clear water as lakes do, and being unshakable as a large rock''). A real-time database is a database system which uses real-time processing to handle workloads whose state is constantly changing. This differs from traditional databases containing persistent data, mostly unaffected by time. For example, a stock market changes very rapidly and is dynamic. The graphs of the different markets appear to be very unstable and yet a database has to keep track of current values for all of the markets of the New York Stock Exchange. Real-time processing means that a transaction is processed fast enough for the result to come back and be acted on right away.
