Kandy City Centre
Kandy City Centre is a ten-storey commercial and retail complex which is located in Kandy, Sri Lanka near the Temple of Tooth Relic. Construction of the centre was started in 1993 and opened in 2008. The complex was the vision of Thusitha Wijayasena and undertaken by his company, Property Finance and Investments Kandy (Pvt) Ltd. Construction The site upon which this complex was built was owned by Walker Sons and Company and was occupied by a number of buildings including a cinema and other stores before the site was cleared in 1993. The construction of the centre was abandoned in 1998 due to several reasons and recommenced four years later in 2003. It was completed in 2005 but not formally opened until December 2008. The building was designed by AMC Architects of Singapore, in collaboration with local architecture firm, ADV Consultants and was constructed by Maga Engineering. Kandy ( si, මහනුවර ''Mahanuwara'', ; ta, கண்டி Kandy, ) is a major city in Sri Lanka located in the Central Province, Sri Lanka, Central Province. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. Walker Sons And Company
Walker Sons and Company is an engineering firm established in Kandy in 1854 by a Scottish engineer, John Walker, as ''John Walker and Co''. It is the seventh oldest operating company in Sri Lanka. John Walker was born 24 August 1819 in Doune, Scotland the seventh child of James Walker, a cobbler, and Christina née Strang. He attended school in Deanston and was apprenticed in the engineering shop of Deanston cotton mill, operated by James Finlay and Company. In 1842 he travelled to Ceylon to work as an engineer for Wilson, Ritchie and Co. Over the next 12 years Walker worked as an engineer for a number of firms in Ceylon before returning to Scotland in 1854. In Scotland Walker met up with William Turner, an engineer whom he had known in Ceylon, who encouraged him to return to Ceylon to work with his engineering business in Kandy. Arcade Independence Square
The Arcade Independence Square is a shopping complex in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Housed in a group of renovated buildings including the former Jawatta Lunatic Asylum and the former Western Provincial Council Building, it was built as a part of the Independence Square Redevelopment programme initiated by the national government. History The building was constructed in 1889 at a cost of Rs 450,000 to serve as the Jawatta Lunatic Asylum (also called the Cinnamon Gardens Asylum). In 1875, the then Governor, Sir William Gregory, based on the recommendations of the Principal Civil Medical Officer, Dr. W R Kynsey, decided to build a new asylum to replace the existing facility at Borella. Colombo City Centre is a 47-storey mixed-use development, comprising a five-storey retail space, a 164-room hotel and 192 residential apartments. The building is situated opposite Beira Lake, located at Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Colombo 02. The development was a joint venture between local company, the Abans Group, and Singaporean company, SilverNeedle Hospitality, at an estimated cost of US$170M. As of 2021, it is wholly owned by Abans Group. The construction was undertaken by Sanken Construction (Pvt.) Ltd.
