Kandanos
Kandanos or Kantanos ( el, Κάνδανος or Κάντανος), also Candanos, is a town and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kantanos-Selino, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of . It was part of the former Selino Province which covered the southwest of the island. The town has 421 residents. History Nearby is the site of the ancient town of Cantanus. The town of Kandanos and its surrounding area suffered particularly badly from German occupation during World War II. During the Battle of Crete, resistance fighters had held advancing German soldiers for two days, preventing them from reaching Palaiochora to secure it. In retribution the occupiers razed the village to the ground and erected a sign: ''"Here stood Kandanos, destroyed in retribution for the murder of 25 German soldiers, never to be rebuilt again."'' Floria, Greece
Floria ( el, Φλώρια) is a small village in the Selino province of southwest Crete, Greece. Floria is part of the Kandanos municipality and, according to the latest census, has around 60 inhabitants. On 23 May 1941 and while the Battle of Crete was unfolding, Floria was the location of a fierce battle between advancing German troops and the local population, who spontaneously decided to resist them. In reprisal, a few days later German forces executed several of the villagers during an operation that resulted in the razing of Kandanos. Battle Of Crete
The Battle of Crete (german: Luftlandeschlacht um Kreta, el, Μάχη της Κρήτης), codenamed Operation Mercury (german: Unternehmen Merkur), was a major Axis airborne and amphibious operation during World War II to capture the island of Crete. It began on the morning of 20 May 1941, with a multiple German airborne landings on Crete. Greek and other Allied forces, along with Cretan civilians, defended the island. After only one day of fighting, the Germans had suffered heavy casualties and the Allied troops were confident that they would defeat the invasion. The next day, through communication failures, Allied tactical hesitation, and German offensive operations, Maleme Airfield in western Crete fell, enabling the Germans to land reinforcements and overwhelm the defensive positions on the north of the island. Chania (regional Unit)
Chania ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Χανίων) is one of the four regional units of Greece, regional units of Crete; it covers the westernmost quarter of the island. Its capital is the city of Chania. Chania borders only one other regional unit: that of Rethymno (regional unit), Rethymno to the east. Arta ( so, Carta, ar, عرته) is a town in southeastern Djibouti. The center of the Arta Region, it is the country's sixth-largest city. , the population was 11,043. Arta is situated on the Mountains of Arta and is famous for its mild climate. It is located some west of the national capital, Djibouti City. History The Arta settlement is several centuries old. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Ifat and Adal sultanates. Arta later formed a part of the French Somaliland protectorate in the first half of the 20th century. Selino Province
Selino is a historical region and a former province of Crete. It is located in the remote southwestern corner of the island, in the Chania regional unit. It is a rugged and remote area in the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and also includes Gavdos, an island to the south of Crete considered the southernmost point in Europe. Selino's historical capital is Kandanos, but its largest village is Palaiochora. Sougia is a small but growing resort. The region's name derives from the Venetian castle at Palaiochora, 'Kastello Selino'. The territory of the province corresponded with that of the current municipalities Kantanos-Selino and Gavdos. Cantanus
Cantanus or Kantanos ( grc, Κάντανος), or Cantania or Kantania (Καντανία), was town of ancient Crete, which the Peutinger Table fixes at 24 M.P. from Cisamus. It was a bishop's see under the Byzantine Empire, and when the Venetians obtained possession of the island they established a Latin bishop here, as in every other diocese. No longer the site of a residential bishop, it remains a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church. Ostrý Grúň ( hu, Élesmart) is a village and municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. History The village was massacred and burned down in January 1945 by the Nazi anti-partisan unit Edelweiss, after the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising. Emblem Of Djibouti
The national emblem of Djibouti was introduced after attaining independence from France on 27 June 1977. It was made by Hassan Robleh. It is bordered on the sides with laurel branches. Within this perimeter there is a vertical spear, in front of which is a shield. Underneath the shield, two hands rise away from the spear, both of which carry a large machete. These two hands symbolize the main two ethnic groups of the nation: the Afar and the Issa. The spear is topped by a red star. The star symbolizes the unity between the Issa and the Afar peoples.
