Kamuzu Academy
Kamuzu Academy is a private boarding school in Malawi that was founded by, and named after, the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the former President of Malawi. It is described by its proponents as "The Eton College, Eton of Africa". In 1987, it was the subject of a BBC documentary entitled "The Eton of Africa" made by John Rae (headmaster), John Rae. An idiosyncratic feature of the school is that from the beginning Latin was made a compulsory subject for all students, and is still taught today as a core subject up to IGCSE. Kamuzu Banda is recorded as saying: "This place is for classical education, Greek, Latin, particularly Latin. I want that to be clearly understood by everybody. If you don't like Latin, don't come here." The 40th anniversary Founder's Day service in November 2021 was attended by President Lazarus Chakwera. Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1898 – 25 November 1997) was the Prime Minister of Malawi, prime minister and later President of Malawi, president of Malawi from 1964 to 1994 (from 1964 to 1966, Malawi was an independent Dominion / Commonwealth realm). Boarding School
A boarding school is a school where pupils live within premises while being given formal instruction. The word "boarding" is used in the sense of "room and board", i.e. lodging and meals. The president of the Republic of Malawi ( ny, Mtsogoleri wa Dziko la Malawi) is the head of state and head of government of Malawi. The president leads the executive branch of the Government of Malawi and is the commander-in-chief of the Malawian Defence Force. Eton College
Eton College () is a public school in Eton, Berkshire, England. John Rae (headmaster)
John Rae (20 March 1931 – 16 December 2006) was a British educator, author and novelist. He was headmaster of Taunton School (1966–1970) and then Head Master of Westminster School (1970–1986). In 1986 he became head of the Laura Ashley Foundation and was on the Board of ''The Observer'' newspaper from 1986 to 1993. In 1989 he became executive chairman of the Portman Group. Education Rae was educated at Homefield Preparatory School before Bishop Stortford College, an independent school in Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire, and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Lazarus Chakwera
Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera (born 5 April 1955) is a Malawian theologian and politician who has served as President of Malawi since June 2020. In addition to the Presidency, he also serves as Defence minister, Minister of Defence per Malawian constitution. He has been leader of the Malawi Congress Party since 2013, and was previously Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Malawi, National Assembly following 2019 Malawian general election, highly controversial elections held on 21 May 2019 which were overturned by the Constitutional Court. Catherine Gotani Hara
Catherine Gotani Hara is a Malawian politician who has been the Speaker of the National Assembly since June 2019, the first woman to hold the position. Early life and education Gotani Hara attended Kamuzu Academy, and has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Chancellor College at the University of Malawi. While studying, she ran the University's wing of the Malawi Congress Party. From 1998 to 2000, she completed professional postgraduate training in International Development and Project Planning and Management Brighton. Samson Kambalu
Samson Kambalu (born 1975) is a Malawi-born artist, academic and author who trained as a fine artist and ethnomusicologist at the University of Malawi's Chancellor College. He is a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Life and work Kambalu was born in Malawi, where he attended Kamuzu Academy, the "Eton of Africa". He graduated from the University of Malawi's Chancellor College, Zomba in 1999. Kambalu completed his MA in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University in 2003 and wrote his PhD at Chelsea College of Art and Design, looking at how the problematic of the gift and the general economy animates various aspects of his art practice. Chanju Samantha Mwale
Chanju Samantha Mwale is a Malawian lawyer and army officer. She was the first female lawyer in the Malawian Defence Force and in 2016 became the first female officer of the Malawian Army to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. She was transferred to a research role in 2016, a move she alleged was illegal and took to the Malawi High Court. The court did not hear the case and Mwale chose to retire from the army. Career Chanju Samantha Mwale attended the Kamuzu Academy before graduating with a bachelor of laws degree from Chancellor College (University of Malawi). Yolanda Kaunda
Yolanda Kaunda (née Ndala) (born 1987) is the Malawi's first female aircraft Captain and its second female pilot. Biography Kaunda was born in Lilongwe in 1987 and from the age of six she wanted to become a pilot. She completed her secondary education at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu in 2005, then went to South Africa's Progress Flight Academy. In 2016, Kaunda graduated as Malawi's first female aircraft Captain. Her first flight as Captain took place on 11 March 2016 at Kamuzu International Airport, in Lilongwe. The first Malawian female pilot was Fellie Mkandawire, who stopped flying before reaching the rank of captain. Kaunda graduated as the second female pilot in Malawian history.
