Kalutara Town Club are a first-class cricket team based in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. They played one season of first-class cricket, in the 1996–97 Saravanamuttu Trophy. They had previously been the inaugural winner of the Daily News Trophy in 1938 in the days before it had first-class status. They currently play in Tier B of the Premier Trophy. They played 13 first-class matches in 1996–97, losing 10 and drawing three, and finished last. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Kalutara
Kalutara ( si, කළුතර, ta, களுத்துறை) or Kalutota is a major city in Kalutara District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is also the administrative capital of Kalutara District. It is located approximately south of the capital Colombo. Premier Trophy
The Major League Tournament (formerly known as the Premier Trophy) is the main domestic first-class cricket competition in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1938 and has existed under a number of different names. Matches before the 1988–89 season are not considered first-class. Relaunched as the Lakspray Trophy in 1988–89, it was renamed as the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy in 1990–91 and as the Premier Championship in 1998–99. There was a change of format in 2015–16 when it became the Premier League Tournament which was split into Tiers A and B the following year. The league was cancelled in 2020–21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then a new temporary tournament was introduced in 2021–22 called the National Super Provincial 4-Day Tournament. Pathmanath Perera (born 4 May 1972 in Kalutara) is a former Sri Lankan cricketer who played first-class and List A cricket from 1991 to 2005. Perera captained Kalutara Town Club in their initial first-class season in 1996–97. His highest first-class score was 133 for Kalutara against Sebastianites in 1996–97. Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club are a first-class cricket team based in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Their home ground is De Soysa Stadium. History The club's name derives from its close association with St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa, whose students are known as Sebastianites. The club played several first-class and List A matches at the College ground. Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club competed in the first-class Premier Trophy for 20 seasons from 1990–91 to 2009–10. They played 184 matches, for 38 wins, 50 losses and 96 draws. Surrey Village Cricket Ground
Surrey Village Cricket Ground in Maggona, Sri Lanka, has staged first-class, List A and other cricket matches since it was opened in 2011. Location The ground is in Surrey Village, Maggona, off St Vincent Road, about one kilometre from the sea and the Maggona railway station. Maggona is about 10 kilometres south of Kalutara. History After the 2004 tsunami the Surrey County Cricket Club in England and the Sri Lanka Cricket Board combined to raise money to build a village for some of the Sri Lankan survivors. A Twenty20 match played by international cricketers at Surrey's home ground, The Oval, on 20 June 2005, raised about a million pounds for the project.
