Kalutara Electoral District
Kalutara electoral district is one of the 22 multi-member electoral districts of Sri Lanka created by the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka. The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Kalutara in the Western province. An election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual or multiple individuals to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century. Kumara Welgama
Kumara Welgama ( si, කුමාර වෙල්ගම) (born 5 April 1950) is a Sri Lankan politician and a current member of parliament for the Kalutara District. Welgama had been a minister of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the past. Since 2020, he has been the leader of the New Lanka Freedom Party and contested elections with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Welgama was the chief organiser for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the Agalawatte electorate between 1984 and 2000. He was the Minister of Industrial Development from 2007 to 2010 and the Minister of Transport from 2010 to early 2015 in governments led by the SLFP. Welgama had been a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party until 2019, when he defected from the party after it supported the presidential candidacy of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, paving the way for the return of the Rajapaksa family. 1982 Sri Lankan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka for the first time on 20 October 1982. Nominations were accepted on 17 September 1982 and electoral participation was 81.06%. The election was described as a fight between capitalism and socialism, Hector Kobbekaduwa who advocated to carry on the policies of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party - led regime from 1970 to 1977 was expected to undo most of the open market and capitalist reforms brought in by J. R. Jayewardene. Incumbent president Jayewardene of the governing United National Party was elected, receiving 53% of all votes cast. Although the SLFP lost they managed to win a significant number of votes in Tamil speaking areas such as Point Pedro.
