The West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, 2001 was held in Indian state of West Bengal to elect 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Results Left Front led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 196 seats, a majority. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was reelected as Chief Minister. Pankaj Kumar Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress, took charge as Leader of the Opposition. For the first time since 1971, no single party won a majority. A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency, the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
