Kalima, Democratic Republic Of The Congo
Kalima is a town in Maniema Province, Congo. It is situated northeast of the provincial capital Kindu, between the Ulindi River and the Elila River, at an altitude of 2797 ft (852 m). The economic activity of Kalima and the surrounding area includes tin mining. In 2003 the town saw attacks by the Mai-Mai militias. Kalima has a hospital and is served by Kalima Airport. As of 2012, it had an estimated population of 48,337. Maniema is one of 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its capital is Kindu. Kindu
Kindu is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the capital of Maniema province. It has a population of about 200,000 and is situated on the Lualaba River at an altitude of about 500 metres, and is about 400 km west of Bukavu. Kindu is linked by rail to the mining areas of Kalemie, Kamina and Kananga to the south. It also has an airport with a 2,200 metre runway and has historically been an important port along the Congo River system. History The town was an important centre for the ivory, gold and the slave trade during the nineteenth century. Arab- Swahili slave traders were based here from about 1860 and sent caravans overland to Zanzibar. Ulindi River
The Ulindi River is a tributary of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). There is a proposal to build a hydroelectric power plant on the river to power a gold mining project. Location The river rises in the east of South Kivu and flows in a northwesterly direction through Maniema, joining the Lualaba downstream from Kindu. The upper Ulindi valley has a richly diverse fauna, including many monkey species, chimpanzees, leopards, buffaloes, elephants and antelopes. The valley has traditionally been occupied by the Lega people, speakers of Kilega, a Bantu language. It is administratively divided into the Mwenga, Shabunda and Pangi territories. Elila River
The Elila River is a tributary of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It rises in Mwenga Territory of Sud-Kivu Province and flows west through Shabunda Territory and then Pangi Territory in Maniema Province, entering the Lualaba just downstream of Kindu. In the upper reaches there are rolling grasslands to the south of the river, but the Itombwe Mountains to the north are rugged, covered by rainforest except where rock bluffs emerge from the steepest slopes. Mai-Mai
The term Mai-Mai or Mayi-Mayi refers to any kind of community-based militia group active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that is formed to defend local communities and territory against other armed groups. Most were formed to resist the invasion of Rwandan forces and Rwanda-affiliated Congolese rebel groups, but some may have formed to exploit the war to their own advantage by looting, cattle rustling or banditry. Groups that fall under the umbrella term "Mai-Mai" include armed forces led by warlords, traditional tribal elders, village heads and politically motivated resistance fighters. Because Mai Mai have only the most tenuous internal cohesion, different Mai-Mai groups allied themselves with a variety of domestic and foreign government and guerrilla groups at different times. The Province of the Anglican Church of the Congo (French: Province de l'Église anglicane du Congo) is a province of the Anglican Communion, stretching over the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. History Formal Anglican structures were established in Boga-Zaire from the 1930s.
