Kaliflower Commune
The Friends of Perfection Commune is an List of American Utopian communities, American Utopian community in San Francisco, California. The commune was founded in 1967 on principles of a common treasury, group marriage, free anonymous art, gay liberation, and selfless service. They were originally called the Sutter/Scott Street commune, and commonly referred to as the Kaliflower commune, after their newsletter of the same name. Because the commune's publishing activities helped spread their philosophy, they became a significant influence on Bay Area culture. Many members of The Angels of Light, a free psychedelic drag theater group, originally lived in the ''Kaliflower'' commune. A wide range of utopia, utopian intentional communities were founded across US since the 1700s. Several of them are active in the present day. Secular utopian socialism in the US during the 19th century included the Owenism, Owenite movement of the 1820s, Fourierism (1843–1850), Icarians (1848–1898), and Bellamyism (1889–1896). Hibiscus (entertainer)
Hibiscus (born George Edgerly Harris III; September 6, 1949 – May 6, 1982) was an American actor and performance artist. Starting his career in New York City, he moved to San Francisco, where in the early 1970s he founded the psychedelic gay liberation theater collective known as the Cockettes. He was widely seen in ''Flower Power'' (1967), a photograph taken during a major anti-Vietnam War protest in Washington, DC. He was photographed putting flowers into the gun barrels of the MPs. Early life Harris was born in Bronxville, New York in 1949 to George Edgerly Harris II (1921–2005) and Anna Marie McCanless (1926–2016). The family moved to Clearwater Beach, Florida. The House Of Love And Prayer
The House of Love and Prayer was a Hasidic Jewish congregation and synagogue, located at 347 Arguello Boulevard, in the Richmond district of San Francisco, California, in the United States. Founded in spring/April 1968 by rebbe Shlomo Carlebach, the congregation had a short existence, lasting just ten years. Despite its Hasidic origins, the rituals of worship were inspired by the American counterculture movement, and attracted young, non-affiliated Jews. The congregation eventually disbanded, and some of the congregants relocated to Israel, founding Moshav Mevo Modi'im in 1975. History Carlebach, a rabbi and singer-songwriter founded a synagogue inspired by the counterculture of the 1960s. Carlebach called his congregants "holy hippielech" ("holy hippies"). Haight-Ashbury
Haight-Ashbury () is a district of San Francisco, California, named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets. It is also called the Haight and the Upper Haight. The neighborhood is known as one of the main centers of the counterculture of the 1960s. Location The district generally encompasses the neighborhood surrounding Haight Street, bounded by Stanyan Street and Golden Gate Park on the west, Oak Street and the Golden Gate Park Panhandle on the north, Baker Street and Buena Vista Park to the east and Frederick Street and Ashbury Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods to the south. The Really Really Free Market (RRFM) movement is a horizontally organized collective of individuals who form a temporary Market (economics), market based on an alternative gift economy. RRFM events are often hosted by people unaffiliated with any large organization, and are encouraged to sprout up by anyone, anytime, anywhere. The RRFM movement aims to counteract capitalism in a proactive way by creating a positive example to challenge the questioned myths of scarcity and competition. Food Not Bombs (FNB) is a loose-knit group of independent collectives, sharing free, usually vegan and vegetarian food with others. The group believes that corporate and government priorities are skewed to allow hunger to persist in the midst of abundance. To demonstrate this, FNB serves surplus food gathered from grocery stores, bakeries and markets which would otherwise go to waste, or occasionally has already been thrown away.
