Kalae House
The ''kalae'' house ( th, เรือนกาแล) or traditional Northern Thai/Lanna house () is an architectural style of Northern Thailand, in the area that used to be called Lan Na, today known as Chiang Mai. The house is composed of two compartments sharing the same platform. It is named after the decorative wooden carvings protruding from the top of the gables, features typically found in traditional northern Thai houses. The house is a combination of traditional Lanna and Tai Lue, TaiKhoen and Tai Yong ethnic groups’ residences. The influences from these peoples makes the houses diverse in terms of style, plan, decoration, development of the functions and house elements. Northern Thailand
Northern Thailand, or more specifically Lanna, is geographically characterised by several mountain ranges, which continue from the Shan Hills in bordering Myanmar to Laos, and the river valleys which cut through them. Though like most of Thailand, it has a tropical savanna climate, its relatively high elevation and latitude contribute to more pronounced seasonal temperature variation, with cooler winters than the other regions. Historically it is related to the Lanna Kingdom and its culture. Geography North Thailand is bound by the Salween River in the west and the Mekong in the east. Lan Na
The Lan Na Kingdom ( nod, , , "Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields"; th, อาณาจักรล้านนา, , ), also known as Lannathai, and most commonly called Lanna or Lanna Kingdom, was an Indianized state centered in present-day Northern Thailand from the 13th to 18th centuries. The cultural development of the Northern Thai people had begun long before as successive kingdoms preceded Lan Na. As a continuation of the kingdom of Ngoenyang, Lan Na emerged strong enough in the 15th century to rival the Ayutthaya Kingdom, with whom wars were fought. However, the Lan Na Kingdom was weakened and became a tributary state of the Taungoo Dynasty in 1558. Lan Na was ruled by successive vassal kings, though some enjoyed autonomy. The Tai Lü people ( Tai Lue: ᦺᦑᦟᦹᧉ, , ''Dǎi lè'', lo, ລື້, ''Lư̄'', th, ไทลื้อ, , vi, Người Lự) are an ethnic group of China, Laos, Thailand, Burma and Vietnam. They speak a Southwestern Tai language. Etymology The word ''Lü'' (ລື້) is similar to the ''Lao people'' in the Tai Lü language. Tai Lü can be written as Tai Lue, Dai Le and Dai Lue. They are also known as Xishuangbanna Dai, Sipsongpanna Tailurian and Tai Sipsongpanna. Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai ( th, จอมทอง, ) is a district ('' amphoe'') in the southern part of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. History According to the legend of ''Wat'' Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan, the temple is on a small hill which looks similar to a termite hill (''chom pluak'' in Thai). The hill is covered by ''thong kwao'' or Bastard teak ('' Butea monosperma'') and ''Thong Lang'' or coral tree (''Erythrina variegata'') forest. Thus the people called the hill Chom Thong.
