Kajaani Railway Station
The Kajaani railway station was built from 1904 to 1905, when the railway from Iisalmi to Kajaani was completed as an extension to the Savonia railroad. The station building was designed by Gustaf Nyström. This Jugend building has been called the most beautiful station building in Finland. Services The station has a ticket vending machine and a ticket sales office. The waiting room is open during train service hours. Trackyard The Kajaani station trackyard underwent a large amount of upgrade and repair work in 2005, when the railway from Iisalmi to Kontiomäki was electrified. Also the manual switchboard on the Kajaani station trackyard was dismantled. Nowadays the traffic is handled remotely from Iisalmi railway station. The trackyard has two tracks for passenger transport and five tracks for cargo transport. The trackyard has a track connection to the Lamminniemi paper factory and towards Petäisenniska. Iisalmi
Iisalmi (; sv, Idensalmi) is a town and municipality in the region of Northern Savonia in Finland. It is located north of Kuopio and south of Kajaani. The municipality has a population of (), which makes it the second largest of the five towns in Northern Savonia in population, only Kuopio being larger. It covers an area of of which is water. Kajaani
Kajaani (; sv, Kajana) is the most populous town and the capital of the Kainuu Region of Finland. It is located southeast of Lake Oulu (Oulujärvi), which drains into the Gulf of Bothnia through the Oulu River (Oulujoki). As of , it had a population of . The town was founded in the 17th century, fueled by the growth of the tar industry, but it was preceded by a long history of settlements. Gustaf Nyström
Gustaf Nyström (21 January 1856 – 30 December 1917) was a Finnish architect. Nyström has been described as one of the most important architects in Finland at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was active both as an influential teacher, as an architect in his own right, and as an official involved in groundbreaking urban planning projects. Life Nyström studied architecture at the Polytechnical school (today Helsinki University of Technology) and graduated in 1876. He also spent a year studying in Vienna under Heinrich von Ferstel in 1878–79. He began work in the office of his former teacher, Frans Anatolius Sjöström, and took over Sjöström's firm in 1885. Already in 1879 he started teaching construction at the Polytechnical Institute (as it had then become) and in 1885 was named senior teacher of architecture.
