Kainun Institutti
Kainun institutti – kvensk institutt (before 2005 known as ''Norsk senter for kvensk språk og kultur'') is a center for Kven culture and language. It is located in Børselv in Porsangi (Porsanger) municipality in Norway. It was opened in January 2007. The chair at the institute is ''Hilde Skanke''. In total six people are employed at the institute. Funding is provided by the Norwegian government. Kven People
Kvens (; fi, kveeni; no, kvenar, kvener; sv, kväner; se, kveanat) are a Baltic Finnic peoples, Balto-Finnic ethnic minority in Norway. They are descended from Finnish people, Finnish peasants and fishermen who emigrated from the northern parts of Finland and Sweden to Northern Norway in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1996, Kvens were granted minority status in Norway, and in 2005 the Kven language was recognized as a minority language in Norway. Name The Origin of the name Kven, origin of the term Kven is disputed. There is no evidence that modern Kvens are descendants of the Kvens mentioned in a few ancient Norwegian and Icelandic sources. As a result of Norway signing the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in 1999, the term Kven became for the first time an official name, the name of Finnish descendants with a long history in Norway who view themselves as a member of that particular ethnic minority group of Finnish descent. Kven Language
The Kven language ( or ; or ; fi, kveeni or ; no, kvensk) is a Finnic language or a group of Finnish dialects spoken in the northernmost parts of Norway by the Kven people. For political and historical reasons, it received the status of a minority language in 2005 within the framework of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Linguistically, however, it is seen as a mutually intelligible dialect of the Finnish language, and grouped together with the Peräpohjola dialects such as Meänkieli, spoken in Torne Valley in Sweden. While it is often considered a dialect in Finland, it is officially recognized as a minority language in Norway and some Kven people consider it a separate language. Børselv (, ) is a village in Porsanger Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located at the base of the Sværholt Peninsula, along the east side of the Porsangerfjorden, at the outlet of the river Børselva. Porsanger ( se, Porsáŋgu; fkv, Porsanki) is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Troms og Finnmark Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lakselv. Finnmark University College
Finnmark University College ( no, Høgskolen i Finnmark or HiF) was a university college with three campuses throughout Finnmark, Norway. In August 2013 Finnmark University College and the University of Tromso merged to form what is now called the "University of Tromso - Norway's Arctic University". The Faculty of Education and Liberal Arts and the Faculty of Business and Social Work is located in the town of Alta in Alta Municipality, while the Faculty of Nursing is located in the town of Hammerfest in Hammerfest Municipality. Kven Culture
KVEN (1520 AM, "La Voz 1520 AM & 96.3 FM") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Port Hueneme, California and serves the Ventura County area. The station is owned by Gold Coast Broadcasting and broadcasts a Spanish-language news/talk format. By day, KVEN has a power of 10,000 watts. With a good radio, it can be heard up and down the Pacific Coast of California, from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Because AM 1520 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KOKC in Oklahoma City and WWKB in Buffalo, New York, KVEN drops its power at night to 1,000 watts to reduce interference. It uses a directional antenna at all times. The transmitter is off East Pleasant Valley Road at Dodge Road in Oxnard. It is also heard on 130 watt FM translator K242CW at 96.3 MHz in Oxnard.
