Kaare Sundby
Kaare Sundby (1 January 1905 – 9 February 1945) was a Norwegian engineer who was executed during the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany. He was born in Modum as the son of veterinarian Theodor Sundby and his wife Gullaug, née Bjertnes. Sundby married and had one child, and the family had settled in Vestre Aker. Sundby had taken an education in engineering. When Norway was invaded by Germany in 1940, he became involved in the subsequent fighting. He later involved himself in the Norwegian resistance movement, both in Milorg, as a courier and intelligence gatherer. When the Nazi police leader Karl Marthinsen was assassinated by the Norwegian resistance on 8 February 1945, Sundby was arrested together with thirty-three others, including Carl Ferdinand Gjerdrum, Haakon Sæthre and Jon Vislie, as a reprisal. Occupation Of Norway By Nazi Germany
The occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany during the Second World War began on 9 April 1940 after Operation Weserübung. Conventional armed resistance to the German invasion ended on 10 June 1940, and Nazi Germany controlled Norway until the capitulation of German forces in Europe on 8 May 1945. Throughout this period, a pro-German government named Den nasjonale regjering (English: the National Government) ruled Norway, while the Norwegian king Haakon VII and the prewar government escaped to London, where they formed a government in exile. Civil rule was effectively assumed by the ''Reichskommissariat Norwegen'' (Reich Commissariat of Norway), which acted in collaboration with the pro-German puppet government. Oslofjord
The Oslofjord (, ; en, Oslo Fjord) is an inlet in the south-east of Norway, stretching from an imaginary line between the and lighthouses and down to in the south to Oslo in the north. It is part of the Skagerrak strait, connecting the North Sea and the Kattegat sea area, which leads to the Baltic Sea. Akershus Fortress
Akershus Fortress ( no, Akershus Festning, ) or Akershus Castle ( no, Akershus slott ) is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city. Since the Middle Ages the fortress has been the namesake and centre of the main fief and later main county of Akershus, which was originally one of Norway's four main regions and which included most of Eastern Norway. The fortress itself was located within the Akershus main county until 1919, and also within the smaller Akershus sub county until 1842. The castle has also been used as a military base, a prison and is currently the temporary office of the Prime minister of Norway. A reprisal is a limited and deliberate violation of international law to punish another sovereign state that has already broken them. Since the 1977 Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions (AP 1), reprisals in the laws of war are extremely limited, as they commonly breach the rights of non-combatants.
