KYMA-DT (1988–2020)
KYMA-DT, virtual and VHF digital channel 11, was an NBC- affiliated television station licensed to Yuma, Arizona, United States and also serving El Centro, California. Owned by Atlanta-based Cox Media Group, it was part of a duopoly with CBS affiliate KSWT (channel 13, also licensed to Yuma). News-Press & Gazette Company operated both stations through a shared services agreement (SSA), making them sisters to El Centro-licensed Fox/ABC/ CW+ affiliate KECY-TV (channel 9) and Yuma-licensed low-power Telemundo affiliate KESE-LP (then-analog channel 35). Very High Frequency
Very high frequency (VHF) is the ITU designation for the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves ( radio waves) from 30 to 300 megahertz (MHz), with corresponding wavelengths of ten meters to one meter. Frequencies immediately below VHF are denoted high frequency (HF), and the next higher frequencies are known as ultra high frequency (UHF). VHF radio waves propagate mainly by line-of-sight, so they are blocked by hills and mountains, although due to refraction they can travel somewhat beyond the visual horizon out to about 160 km (100 miles). KIVA (TV)
KIVA (channel 11) was a television station in Yuma, Arizona, United States. It was the first local television station in Yuma and, for more than half of its existence, the only local station. It signed on October 8, 1953, and signed off January 31, 1970, being affiliated with NBC throughout its history. For more than half of its existence, it was owned by Bruce Merrill. The station shut down because of economic troubles resulting from the presence of three total stations in the market. Construction and early years The Imperial Valley gained its first television station on March 25, 1953, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) awarded a permit to Valley Telecasting to construct a television station on VHF channel 11.
