KW Granite Club
The Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Curling Club (branded as the KW Granite Club) is a curling club on Seagram Drive in Waterloo, Ontario. History The club was formed in 1927 as the Granite Club by the Athletic Association of Kitchener and Waterloo (AAKW), which was briefly called the Kitchener Curling Club. The club played on a five-sheet rink at 69 Agnes Street in Kitchener. The AAKW had been formed by members of the clubs located at the corners of Erb and Regina streets in Waterloo and Gaukel Street in Kitchener (previously Berlin). Curling had been played at those clubs since the 1880s. The club adopted the name "Granite Club" to appeal to more than just curling. Artificial ice was added in 1928. In 1928, the Kitchener Tennis Club built five courts next to the club, and in 1931 the K-W Badminton Club added an addition. Ontario Tankard
The Ontario Tankard is the Southern Ontario provincial championship for men's curling. The winner represents Team Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier. The tournament is overseen by CurlON (formerly the Ontario Curling Association). Northern Ontario has its own provincial championship, known as the Northern Ontario Men's Provincial Curling Championship. This championship is not to be confused with the Silver Tankard, historically also known as the Ontario Tankard (and until 1937 a Brier qualifier). 1940 Macdonald Brier
The 1940 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 4 to 7, 1940 at the Winnipeg Amphitheatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This was the first Brier to be held outside The Granite Club in Toronto as the Brier became more of a national event as it would travel around the country. Winnipeg was chosen to host the event after an invitation from the Manitoba Curling Association, and due to Manitoba's dominance at the Brier up to that point. Team Manitoba, who was skipped by Howard "Pappy" Wood, captured the Brier Tankard in their hometown by finishing undefeated in round robin play with a 9-0 record. Wood had only assembled the team prior to deadline for entries for that year's MCA Bonspiel, which they ended up winning. The final draw attracted 5,000 fans, the largest attendance for a curling match up to that point. Ernie Parkes
George Ernest Parkes (November 4, 1898 — July 7, 1948) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and curling, curler. He played 84 games in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association with the Vancouver Millionaires, Vancouver Millionaires/Maroons between 1921 and 1924 and then 17 games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Maroons during the 1924–25 NHL season, 1924–25 season. Prior to turning professional he spent several years in the senior ice hockey, senior OHA Senior A League (1890–1979), Ontario Hockey League. In curling, he was a member of the 1939 Macdonald Brier championship team. Career Parkes was born in Victoria, British Columbia, but grew up in Dunnville, Ontario. Weston Birch "Bert" Hall (November 7, 1885 – December 6, 1948) was a military aviator and writer. Hall was one of America's first combat aviators, flying with the famed Lafayette Escadrille in France before the U.S. entered World War I.
