KGIM (1420 AM, "FOX Sports Aberdeen 1420 AM") is a radio station licensed to serve Aberdeen, South Dakota. The station is owned by Prairie Winds Broadcasting, Inc. It airs a sports format featuring programming from Fox Sports Radio. The station was assigned these call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on June 16, 1982. Alonzo Ward Hotel
The Alonzo Ward Hotel is a historic hotel in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property to the Aberdeen Commercial Historic District. History Businessman Alonzo Ward first built a hotel on the site in 1894. In November 1926, this first structure was destroyed in a fire. Work began on a replacement building in 1927 with the new hotel opening in May 1928. The first radio station in Aberdeen, KABR, began operations on the sixth floor in 1935. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1982. The building is also listed on the National Register as a key contributing property of the Aberdeen Commercial Historic District; the district was listed on May 23, 1988. KQKD (1380 AM) is a radio station in Redfield, South Dakota (licensed to serve Redfield). The station is licensed to Gray Ghost Broadcasting. It airs a full service format. The station was assigned these call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on June 4, 1979. History On November 16, 1986, a fire destroyed a block of buildings in Redfield, including the studios of KQKD. Four other businesses were destroyed in the fire that left 20 people homeless and killed a 17-month-old girl. The wire story in the ''San Jose Mercury News'' included a note that the radio station was then celebrating its 25th anniversary. In June 1997, station owner Roberts Radio of Pleasantville, New York, told the ''Aberdeen American News'' that old equipment at KQKD had been replaced in an effort to improve the sound of the station's programming.
