Nanalal Dalpatram Kavi
Nanalal Dalpatram Kavi (16 March 1877 – 9 January 1946) was an Indian writer and poet in Gujarati language of Gujarati literature. His name is sometimes spelled as Nhanalal. Biography Nanalal was born on 16 March 1877 in Ahmedabad as the fourth son of Dalpatram, who settled there since 1848 after migrating from Wadhwan. Dalpatram was popular and admired as poet that his ancestral surname Tarvadi (Trivedi) was gradually dropped and he came to be generally known as Kavi (poet). Nanalal and his descendants then adopted permanently Kavi as their surname. Nanalal passed his matriculation examination in 1893. He took his college education in various colleges at Bombay, Poona and Ahmedabad, and received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Bombay in 1901. He died on 9 January 1946 in Ahmedabad. His parents died at a very young age and poverty deprived him of school. With the help of his brother, he made a small living selling matchboxes to the nearby villages. Even when young he had a keen interest in play and music. He initially started off acting in plays at the local temple and then got connected with some leading play groups in Tamil Nadu. Kavi Kunjara Bharati (1810–1896) was a Tamil poet and a composer of Carnatic music. He was born in a family with long involvement in music and scholarship. Ancestry His ancestors belonged to Tirunelveli district. His parents lived in the village of Perungarai in Ramanathapuram district. It is said the whole village was a gift from Maharaja Ragunatha Sethupathi (1675–1670) to their family. His given name was Koteeswara Bharathi after his grandfather with the same name. Kaviraj (or Rajkavi, Kaviraja) is a title of honor, which was given to poets and litterateurs attached to royal courts in medieval India. Eminent Charans who were inducted into the royal courts due to their literary merit as royal poets and historians were given the rank of Kaviraja (King of Poets). Such Charans assumed positions of great influence in the medieval polity.
