KATV (Alaska)
KATV ("Ketchikan Alaska Television") was a cable television service in Ketchikan, Alaska Territory, United States. It was established in November 1953 (six years before statehood) and was the first television service of any kind in Alaska. History R. D. "Chuck" Jensen and Wally Christiansen started KATV in 1953 with the goal of bringing television to Ketchikan, then a town of about 5,000 people. At the time the system was announced in July, Alaska Territory had no broadcast television stations, and it was not expected that there would be one before the end of the year; consequently, KATV announced its programming would consist of films and kinescopes supplied from the mainland. Ketchikan, Alaska
Ketchikan ( ; tli, Kichx̱áan) is a city in and the borough seat of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough of Alaska. It is the state's southeasternmost major settlement. Downtown Ketchikan is a National Historic District. With a population at the 2020 census of 8,192, up from 8,050 in 2010, it is the sixth-most populous city in the state, and thirteenth-most populous community when census-designated places are included. The surrounding borough, encompassing suburbs both north and south of the city along the Tongass Highway (most of which are commonly regarded as a part of Ketchikan, albeit not a part of the city itself), plus small rural settlements accessible mostly by water, registered a population of 13,948 in that same census. KSA-TV
KSA-TV, broadcasting on cable systems on channel 4, was an NBC- affiliated television station located in Sitka, Alaska, United States. It was the first local television station in Sitka, operating between 1959 and 1983. It was also an affiliate of the NTA Film Network. History KSA-TV launched on November 15, 1959, at 6 p.m., as the first television station of any kind in Sitka. It was owned by a company known as Sitka Alaska TeleVision; the majority shareholder, Ketchikan Alaska TeleVision, operated the similar "KATV" in Ketchikan, which had gone on the air before any broadcast stations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau. McCaw Cellular Communications was a cellular telephone pioneer in the United States. Savvy licensing of cellular spectrum in the early 1980s put McCaw Cellular in an extremely strong position, quickly outpacing the growth of the "Baby Bells" in the emerging market. The company purchased MCI Communications's mobile businesses in 1986, followed by LIN Broadcasting in 1989, giving them widespread access in all of the major US markets. Prince Rupert is a port city in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Its location is on Kaien Island near the Alaskan panhandle.
