K. W. T. Nissanka
Second Lieutenant K. W. T. Nissanka PWV, GR was a Sri Lankan army officer who was the platoon commander of his platoon. He fought with courage in the face of an enemy attack, sacrificing his life so as to enable his troops of his platoon to withdraw with their injured. He was awarded the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya, the highest award for valour of the Sri Lanka Army. Early life K. W. T. Nissanka attended D.S. Senanayake College and joined the army as a cadet officer soon after leaving school in 1990. After completing his training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Gajaba Regiment. Second lieutenant is a junior commissioned officer military rank in many armed forces, comparable to NATO OF-1 rank. Australia The rank of second lieutenant existed in the military forces of the Australian colonies and Australian Army until 1986. In the colonial forces, which closely followed the practices of the British military, the rank of second lieutenant began to replace ranks such as ensign and cornet from 1871. Sri Lanka Military Academy
The Sri Lanka Military Academy () (SLMA or SLMA Diyatalawa), commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the Sri Lanka Army's training centre where officer cadets are trained for getting commission. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. All Sri Lanka Army officer cadets, including army cadets of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, are trained at SLMA. Although not a university, SLMA is affiliated to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to provide its cadets of regular long course a degree in military studies. It has capacity to train more than 300 cadets. History When the Ceylon Army was raised in 1949, the need arose to recruit and train officers and soldiers of the newly formed army. A cadet is an officer trainee or candidate. The term is frequently used to refer to those training to become an officer in the military, often a person who is a junior trainee. Pooneryn
Poonakary ( ta, பூநகரி, translit=Pūnakari; si, පූනෙරිය, translit=Pūneriya),is a tamil village strategically important village in the northern province of Sri Lanka situated just below the Jaffna Peninsula. A fort was built in the Poonakary area of northern portion of the island, at first by the Portuguese to protect its possessions in Jaffna. It was later taken and expanded by the Dutch, and in 1770 it was recorded that it was square-shaped with two bastions at opposite corners; the rampart on each of the sides was about 30 metres, it was garrisoned until the late 18th century. The British built a rest house in 1805. Since 1983, due to the civil war, it was garrisoned by the Sri Lankan Army from 1983 until the Sri Lankan military withdrew from the Poonakary area in 1991.
