K. P. Rajagopalan
Kumbakonam P. Rajagopalan (January,1902–27.4.1944), known by his pen name Ku. Pa. Ra. was a Tamil writer, translator and journalist. He is linked with the Manikodi tradition of Tamil writers. He has been compared with his co-writers Pudumaipithan, Mowni. M. V. Venkatram and Na. Pichamurthy. His short stories are clear and bold. His subject deals more of the hidden feelings of women on love and sex. His sister, Ku.Pa.Sethu, was also a writer. Early life Rajagopalan was born in 1902 in Kumbakonam, Madras Presidency. He had his education in Kumbakonam and joined the services of the Madras government. However, he was soon affected by cataract and was forced to quit his government job. Career In 1937, when sight was restored to his eyes after a successful operation, he moved to Madras in order to commence a career as a professional writer. Manikodi
''Manikkodi'' was a Tamil non-fiction literary weekly that was published from 1933 to 1939. Founded by Stalin Srinivasan, V. Ramaswami Iyengar and T. S. Chockalingam, the magazine was noted for its expertly-written articles by eminent authors like Swaminatha Athreya and gave birth to the Manikkodi Literary Movement. The magazine launched the careers of newcomers like C. S. Chellappa, Puthumaipithan, and Chitti who have earned acclaim as literary greats. Pudumaipithan
C. Viruthachalam (25 April 1906 – 30 June 1948), better known by the pseudonym Pudhumaipithan (also spelt as Pudumaipithan or Puthumaippiththan), was one of the most influential and revolutionary writers of Tamil fiction. His works were characterized by social satire, progressive thinking and outspoken criticism of accepted conventions. Contemporary writers and critics found it difficult to accept his views and his works were received with extreme hostility. He as an individual and his works have been extensively reviewed and debated for over sixty years since his death. Mowni
Mowni was the pen name of Tamil fiction writer S. Mani Iyer (1907–1985). Born at Semmangudi, Mowni, was one of the few writers of Tamil fiction. He had his high school education in Kumbakonam and lived there for fourteen years after marrying. Then he moved to Chidambaram permanently to look after his family properties. He initially had 5 children. There were 4 boys and 1 girl. Two of his sons died when they were very young. One other son passed on due to an accident. His remaining son lives in USA. His daughter lives near Kumbakonam. Mowni had a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, but he did not take up any job. Kumbakonam
Kumbakonam (formerly spelt as Coombaconum or Combaconum) or Kudanthai is a city municipal corporation in the Thanjavur district in the States of India, Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located from Thanjavur and from Chennai and is the headquarters of the Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district. It is the second largest city in the district after Thanjavur. The Madras Presidency, or the Presidency of Fort St. George, also known as Madras Province, was an administrative subdivision (presidency) of British India.
