Jānis Blūms
Jānis Blūms (born 20 April 1982) is a former Latvian professional basketball player. Standing at , Blūms played both point guard and shooting guard positions. He also served as the captain of the Latvian national basketball team. Player career Blūms started his career with Brocēni and later continued to play in their successor Skonto. In 2003, he signed with Polish club Anwil Włocławek, where he spent one season before returning to Latvia, where he joined BK Ventspils. After two years in Ventspils, Blūms joined Lithuanian powerhouse BC Lietuvos rytas. In 2007, Blūms accepted offer from Italian side Eldo Napoli where he had a decent season. Jānis Dūklavs (born 24 November 1952, Ķegums, Latvia) is a Latvian politician from Union of Greens and Farmers. Dūklavs was Minister of Agriculture of Latvia from 2014 to 2019. Dūklavs came into disrepute during the Hotel Rīdzene leaks scandal in 2017, during which transcripts of secretly recorded talks between Aivars Lembergs, Andris Šķēle, Ainārs Šlesers and other individuals at the Hotel Rīdzene were published by the Ir magazine. Jānis Dreimanis
Jānis Dreimanis (born 13 October 1949, Riga) is a Latvian former football defender. In his career, he played 115 matches for Daugava Rīga, scoring four goals. Playing career Dreimanis' first steps in football were made with Darba Rezerves in Riga, where at the time worked the famous former Latvian footballer Alfons Jēgers. First senior club - Enerģija Rīga in the Latvian league, then he played for ASK Rīga for 2 years. In 1971, he joined Zvejnieks Liepāja, which played on a higher level than his previous teams - in the Soviet second league. In 1972, he got transferred to Daugava Rīga. His best season with Daugava was in 1974 when Daugava played in the second division playoffs, and Dreimanis had a strong shot and often scored goals from a far distance. Jānis Doniņš (born 20 April 1946) is a Latvian- American former javelin thrower. Competing for the Soviet Union, he won the silver medal at the 1971 European Athletics Championships behind Jānis Lūsis. Career Doniņš placed sixth in the javelin throw at the 1969 European Championships in Athens with a throw 79.10 m (259 ft 6 in). He won his event at the 1971 United States vs. Soviet Union dual meet in Berkeley, California with 89.33 m (293 ft 1 in), a meeting record and his personal best. At the European Championships later that year in Helsinki he threw 85.30 m (279 ft 10 in) and placed second behind his teammate Jānis Lūsis. ''Track & Field News'' ranked Doniņš tenth in the world in 1969 and second in 1971. Jānis Dimza
Jānis Dimza (1 November 1906, Ipiķi parish – 1942) was a Latvian decathlete. He placed fourth at the European Championships in 1934, and challenged for medals at the Olympic Games in 1932 until he injured himself in the pole vault. Career Dimza placed second in the pentathlon at the 1930 International University Games in Darmstadt. The pentathlon had been discontinued as an Olympic event after 1924, so at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he only competed in the decathlon. He had scored 7789 points in that event in 1931, and was one of many favorites in what was expected to be a close competition. He was a close fourth after seven events; in the eighth event, pole vault, he cleared 3.50 m to move up to second place, but landed badly and injured his leg. He was unable to continue. Jānis Daliņš
Jānis Daliņš (5 November 1904 – 11 June 1978) was a Latvian race walker. Competing in the 50 km event he won a silver medal at the 1932 Olympics, becoming the first Latvian to win an Olympic medal. He also won the 1934 European title and set seven world records in the 1930s. At the 1936 Olympics he led the race at 30 km, but abandoned the race due to a leg injury. Biography Daliņš started late, and had his first competition at the age of 22. A few months later he set a Latvian record in the 5000 m walk. In 1932, he set his first world record, over the 25 mile distance. After the 1936 Olympics Dāliņš semi-retired from athletics to work on his farm and raise his family. Jānis Čoke
Jānis Čoke (24 September 1878 in Idus parish (now Valmiera Municipality), Kreis Wolmar, Governorate of Livonia – 9 June 1910 in Turku, Grand Duchy of Finland) was a Latvian revolutionary who is known for his involvement in the 1906 robbery of the branch of Russian State Bank in Helsinki. Life Čoke was an industrial worker who joined the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party in 1902 and became a member on the party's militant wing. During the 1905 Russian Revolution, Čoke founded the revolutionary organization ''Brašie'' which was related with several prison riots and attacks against the gendarmerie in Riga. In February 1906, the Latvian revolutionary Jānis Luters formed a group of 15 revolutionaries. The gang was sent to Finland to rob the Russian State Bank branch in Helsinki. Jānis Cimze (3 July/21 June 1814 — 22 October/10 October 1881) was a Latvian pedagogue, collector and harmoniser of folk songs, organist, founder of Latvian choral music and initiator of professional Latvian music. He is buried at the Lugaži Cemetery. Early life Cimze was born at the Rauna Manor's Cimze dairy farm (hoflage) in the family of a manor's dairy farm overseer Andreas (Ansis) Cimze and his wife Anne as the first child of 8 for his parents. Jānis Bulis (born 17 August 1950 in Briģi Parish, Ludza Municipality) is a Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Rēzekne-Aglona in Latvia. Biography Jānis Bulis was born on 17 August 1950 in Briģi Parish, Ludza Municipality, Latvia. After his secondary education, he entered in the Riga's Metropolitan Roman Catholic Theological Seminary in 1972, from which he finished in 1977. The same year, on May 22, 1977, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. James's Cathedral in Riga by Cardinal Julijans Vaivods.
