János Dezső Aczél (; 26 December 1924 – 1 January 2020), also known as John Aczel, was a Hungarian-Canadian mathematician, who specialized in functional equations and information theory. Albert Nijenhuis
Albert Nijenhuis (November 21, 1926 – February 13, 2015) was a Dutch-American mathematician who specialized in differential geometry and the theory of deformations in algebra and geometry, and later worked in combinatorics. His high school studies at the gymnasium in Arnhem were interrupted by the evacuation of Arnhem by the Nazis after the failure of Operation Market Garden by the Allies. He continued his high school mathematical studies by himself on his grandparents’ farm, and then took state exams in 1945. His university studies were carried out at the University of Amsterdam, where he received the degree of Candidaat (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) in 1947, and a Doctorandus (equivalent to a Masters in Science) in 1950, cum laude. ''Advances in Mathematics'' is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research on pure mathematics. It was established in 1961 by Gian-Carlo Rota. The journal publishes 18 issues each year, in three volumes. At the origin, the journal aimed at publishing articles addressed to a broader "mathematical community", and not only to mathematicians in the author's field. Herbert Busemann writes, in the preface of the first issue, "The need for expository articles addressing either all mathematicians or only those in somewhat related fields has long been felt, but little has been done outside of the USSR. Ákos Császár
Ákos Császár ( hu, Császár Ákos, ) (26 February 1924, Budapest – 14 December 2017, Budapest) was a Hungarian mathematician, specializing in general topology and real analysis. He discovered the Császár polyhedron, a nonconvex polyhedron without diagonals. He introduced the notion of syntopogeneous spaces, a generalization of topological spaces. During the end of 1944 his grandfather lost his life during the siege of Budapest. Then his father, older brother and himself were arrested by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp approximatively 45 miles east of Budapest. An infectious illness spread in the camp, and his brother and father died, but Ákos survived. He is a member of the group of five students of the late professor Lipót Fejér who called them "The Big Five". The other four are John Horvath, János Aczél, Steven Gaal and László Fuchs, all of whom are now retired mathematics professors in North America.

Steven Alexander Gaal (February 22, 1924 – March 17, 2016) (also known as István Sándor Gál or I. S. Gál) was a Hungarian- American mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota—Minneapolis. Education Gaal received his Ph.D. under Frigyes Riesz and Lipót Fejér in 1947, although at the time, graduate study in Hungary did not exist in the formal way it is thought of today. There were no formalities of preliminary exams or qualifying exams, no thesis advisor or tuition. After World War I, Hungary was dismembered and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy ended. Two thirds of Hungary's territory was given to other states, some existing, others created and since vanished. Under these conditions, only few higher education faculty could be appointed and students had to learn only from books or one or two old sick professors.
