Juro Mětšk
Juro Mětšk (1 May 1954 – 20 January 2022) was a Sorbian composer. Life and career Born in Bautzen, the son of the Sorbian writer and publicist , he studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin until 1976, and was a teacher at a music school from 1976 to 1980. From 1980 to 1983, he completed master studies at the Academy of Arts, Berlin with Reiner Bredemeyer. In 1985, he received the Hans Stieber Prize as part of the Hallische Musiktage. From 1983 to 1986, he worked as a music dramaturge at the in Bautzen and has lived there as a freelance composer since 1986. His work ''Syndrom'' was awarded a prize at the 1989 competition Forum junger Komponisten of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Mětšk died in Herrnhut on 20 January 2022, at the age of 67. Bautzen
Bautzen () or Budyšin () is a hill-top town in eastern Saxony, Germany, and the administrative centre of the district of Bautzen. It is located on the Spree river. In 2018 the town's population was 39,087. Until 1868, its German name was ''Budissin''. In 1945 the Battle of Bautzen was Hitler’s last victory against the Soviet Union during the Battle of Berlin . The Hallische Musiktage are a festival specialised on contemporary music, based in Halle (Saale). Founded in 1955, it is held annually in November, the second-oldest German festival of contemporary music after the Donaueschinger Musiktage. Hans Stieber Prize
The Hans Stieber Prize is a promotional prize for composers of serious and light music, which is awarded by the fiduciary trust ''Hans Stieber Foundation'' of the ''Landesverband Sachsen-Anhalt '' based in Halle (Saale). The name giver and dedicatee is Hans Stieber (1886–1969), composer and founding director of the . It was donated after Stieber's death by his widow Gretl Stieber in 1977 from his inheritance and awarded annually until 1989 to mainly young composers of the GDR. Reiner Bredemeyer
Reiner Bredemeyer (2 January 1929 − 5 December 1995) was a German composer. He was born in Vélez, Santander and went to school in Breslau. In 1944 he was drafted into military service and was briefly held as a prisoner of war of the American Army in Bavaria. After the end of World War II, he met composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann who introduced him to the music of Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Anton Webern, Edgard Varèse, Charles Ives and Erik Satie. From 1949 to 1953 he studied composition with Karl Höller at the Munich Academy for Musical Arts. In 1954 Paul Dessau took him to East Germany, where Bredemeyer became a master student of Rudolf Wagner-Régeny at the DDR Academy of Arts, Berlin. He taught at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and worked together with Bertold Brecht, Walter Felsenstein and Ernst Busch.
