Juragua Nuclear Power Plant
Juragua Nuclear Power Plant was a nuclear power plant under construction in Cuba when a suspension of construction was announced in 1992 following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the termination of Soviet economic aid to Cuba. Russia and Cuba sought third-country financing to complete the plant in the mid-1990s but in 2000 the two countries agreed to abandon the project. A workers' town, Ciudad Nuclear, was built next to the plant and is inhabited today with many buildings left in a half-finished state. Background Cuba's interest in civil use of nuclear energy dated back to 1956, when Cuba and the United States signed an "Agreement for co-operation concerning civil uses of atomic energy". This agreement suggested the possibility of further cooperation extending to the design, construction, and operation of power producing nuclear reactors. HolguÃn
HolguÃn () is a municipality and city in Cuba, and the capital of Province of HolguÃn. After Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Camagüey, it is the fourth largest city in Cuba. History Before Columbus, the Taino people settled in huts made from royal palm in the Holguin area later urbanized by the Spanish; their artifacts are shown at the local Holguin La Periquera museum. The settlement was founded in 1523 on land donated by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar to Captain Francisco GarcÃa HolguÃn, a Spanish military officer. Holguin added his maternal surname to the name of the town, giving it the name San Isidoro de HolguÃn. Prior to 1976, HolguÃn was located in the province of Oriente. Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant
The Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) ( fi, Loviisan ydinvoimalaitos, sv, Lovisa kärnkraftverk) is located close to the Finnish town of Loviisa. It houses two Soviet-designed VVER-440 PWR reactors, with capacities of 507 MW each. It is one of Finland's two operating nuclear power plants, the other being the three-unit Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant. History The reactors at Loviisa NPP went into commercial operation in 1977 and 1981 respectively. To comply with Finnish nuclear regulation, Westinghouse and Siemens supplied equipment and engineering expertise.
