Junior Mahony
John "Junior" Mahony (20 August 1897 – 8 May 1973) was an Irish hurler. Usually lining out as a goalkeeper, he was a member of the Galway team that won the 1923 All-Ireland Championship. Playing career Mahony enjoyed a club career with Ardrahan that spanned three decades, however, he enjoyed little in terms of championship success. He is regarded as one of the club's greatest-ever players and was included on a special Team of the Millennium. After being selected for the Galway senior team in 1919, he held his position on the team for the next decade. He won a Connacht medal in 1922 before winning his sole All-Ireland medal in 1923 after Galway's defeat of Limerick in the final. Mahony was a runner-up in four subsequent All-Ireland finals and retired from inter-county hurling in 1929. Tailteann Games (Irish Free State)
The Tailteann Games or Aonach Tailteann was an Irish sporting and cultural festival held in the Irish Free State in 1924, 1928, and 1932. It was intended as a modern revival of the Tailteann Games held from legendary times until the Norman invasion of Ireland; as such it drew inspiration from the Modern Olympics revival of the Ancient Olympics. Croke Park, the Dublin headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association, was the venue for the opening ceremony and many of the sports events, which were open to people of Irish birth or ancestry. Ardrahan Hurlers
Ardrahan () is a village in County Galway, Ireland. History Richard de Burgo conquered Galway in 1236, and granted the land to Maurice Fitzgerald who built the castle whose ruins still stand today. The churchyard wall contains the remains of a round tower, which suggests that a monastic community may have existed on the site before the castle was built. Places of interest The most noteworthy attraction in Ardrahan is Tulira Castle, once owned by playwright and independence activist Edward Martyn. Tulira Castle was for a long time owned by Galway County Council, but was bought in 2015 by CarTrawler owner Niall Turley for €5.8 million. The church at Labane, Ardrahan, which was the parish church of Joe Roche, has several stained glass windows by Alfred E. Child, Ethel Rhind and Michael Healy. 1922 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1922 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 36th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began in May 1922 and ended on 9 September 1923. The championship was won by Kilkenny who secured the title following a 4-2 to 2-6 defeat of Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. This was their 8th All-Ireland title, their first in nine championship seasons. The Irish War of Independence () or Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war fought in Ireland from 1919 to 1921 between the Irish Republican Army (IRA, the army of the Irish Republic) and British forces: the British Army, along with the quasi-military Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and its paramilitary forces the Auxiliaries and Ulster Special Constabulary (USC). It was part of the Irish revolutionary period. In April 1916, Irish republicans launched the Easter Rising against British rule and proclaimed an Irish Republic. Although it was crushed after a week of fighting, the Rising and the British response led to greater popular support for Irish independence. Ballykinler (), often transcribed as Ballykinlar, is a village and civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies 12 kilometres south west of Downpatrick, in the parish of Tyrella and Dundrum. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 348 people. The Irish Republican Army (IRA; ga, Óglaigh na hÉireann) was an Irish republican revolutionary paramilitary organisation. The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na Gaillimhe) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams.
