Julius Van De Sande Bakhuyzen
Julius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen (18 June 1835, in The Hague – 21 October 1925, in The Hague) was a Dutch etcher and painter in the Hague School. He was a member of a number of artists' associations, such as Arti et Amicitiae and Pulchri Studio. Biography Julius took his first art lessons from his father, Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen, who was a painter. Julius studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 1871 he won the royal medal at an exhibition in Amsterdam with his painting 'Pond in the Hague Forest'. From 1875 he spent most summers in Drenthe, often with his sister Gerardine, who also painted. His works include mainly landscapes, with trees often playing a prominent role. Hague School
The Hague School is a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the Realism (visual arts), realist painters of the French Barbizon school. The painters of the Hague school generally made use of relatively somber colors, which is why the Hague School is sometimes called the ''Gray School''. Precursors After the great periods of Dutch art in the Dutch Golden Age painting, Golden Age of the 17th century, there were economic and political problems which diminished activity in art. The fine arts in the Netherlands enjoyed a revival around 1830, a time now referred to as the Romanticism, Romantic period in Dutch painting. Pulchri Studio
Pulchri Studio (Latin:"For the study of beauty") is a Dutch art society, art institution and art studio based in The Hague ('s-Gravenhage), Netherlands. This institute began in 1847 at the home of painter Lambertus Hardenberg. Since 1893 the club has its residence in the villa at Lange Voorhout in The Hague. Membership is made up of painters, sculptors, photographers and art lovers, with members selected by a committee. An artist's membership allows themt to exhibit their own works in the galleries of the Company. Guests have to be invited by members. Rijksmuseum Hendrik (Hendrikus) van de Sande Bakhuyzen (2 January 1795 – 12 December 1860) was a Dutch landscape painter and art teacher. He was a prominent contributor to the Romantic period in Dutch art and his students and children founded the art movement known as the Hague School. Like his contemporaries Edward Williams, Jacob Maris, and Jozef Israëls, he was part of a family of prominent painters, including son Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen, daughter Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen, and nephew Alexander Hieronymus Bakhuyzen.
