Julie Makani
Julie Makani (born 1970) is a Tanzanian medical researcher. From 2014 she is Wellcome Trust Research Fellow and Associate Professor in the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Also a visiting fellow and consultant to the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, she is based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In 2011, she received the Royal Society Pfizer Award for her work with sickle cell disease. Education After attending St Constantine's Primary school in Arusha, Tanzania, Makani trained in medicine in Tanzania at Muhimbili University, receiving her medical degree in 1994. In 1997, she attended post-graduate studies in internal medicine at the Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London, on a Commonwealth scholarship. Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is a public university in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is accredited by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). ''100 Women'' is a BBC multi-format series established in 2013. The annual series examines the role of women in the 21st century and has included events in London and Mexico.
