Judith Schwentner
Judith Schwentner (born 2 September 1968) is an Austrian journalist and politician of The Greens – The Green Alternative, The Greens who has been Vice Mayor of Graz, the second-largest city in Austria, since 2021. She has also served as councillor in the city government since 2019 and a member of the municipal council since 2021. She previously sat as a member of the National Council (Austria), National Council from 2008 to 2017. Education and professional career After attending an elementary school in the Eggenberg (Graz), Eggenberg district of Graz and graduating from the Akademisches Gymnasium (Vienna), Akademisches Gymnasium in 1986, Schwentner began Slavic and German studies at the University of Graz in 1987. She stayed in Moscow from 1992–93 for a research stay, and completed her studies the next year with a thesis on the life and work of the writer Avdotya Panaeva. Graz
Graz (; sl, Gradec) is the capital city of the Austrian state of Styria and second-largest city in Austria after Vienna. As of 1 January 2021, it had a population of 331,562 (294,236 of whom had principal-residence status). 2008 Austrian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Austria on 28 September 2008 to elect the 24th National Council, the lower house of Austria's bicameral parliament. The snap election was called after Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) withdrew from the ruling grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) in July. Due to dissatisfaction with the governing parties, the opposition and minor parties were expected to make significant gains. Opinion polling indicated that up to seven parties could potentially win seats. Elke Kahr
Elke Kahr (born 2 November 1961) is an Austrian politician of the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) who has served as Mayor of Graz, the second-largest city in Austria, since 2021. She was previously a city councillor in the municipal government since 2005. Between June 2016 and April 2017, she served as vice mayor of the city. Early and personal life Kahr was born in Graz in 1961. Her biological father was a student from Iran. She was adopted at three years of age and grew up in a working-class district. After finishing elementary and secondary school, she attended the commercial school in Grazbachgasse. 2021 Graz Local Election
The 2021 Graz local election was held on 26 September 2021 to elect the members of the Gemeinderat of Graz. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) became the largest party for the first time in the city's history, winning 29% of votes cast. The previous governing party, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), fell from 38% to second place with 26%. 2017 Austrian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Austria on 15 October 2017 to elect the 26th National Council, the lower house of Austria's bicameral parliament. The snap election was called when the coalition government between the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was dissolved in May by the latter party's new leader Sebastian Kurz. The ÖVP took a strong lead in opinion polls after Kurz's confirmation as leader, and emerged as the largest party in the election, with 31.5% of votes cast and 62 of the 183 seats in the National Council.
