Juankoski
Juankoski is a former town and municipality of Finland. In March 2014, the Juankoski city council decided that the town would merge with Kuopio in the beginning of 2017. Juankoski is located in the province of Eastern Finland, part of the Northern Savonia region. It covers an area of of which is water. Juankoski formally became a town in 1998. Neighbouring municipalities of Juankoski include Juuka, Kaavi, Tuusniemi, Kuopio, Nilsiä and Rautavaara. The former municipality is unilingually Finnish. History In 1746, Brynolf Brunou established an ironworks near the rapids between Vuotjärvi and Akonvesi. The area was a part of the Nilsiä chapel community of the Kuopio parish. Nilsiä became a separate parish in 1816 and a municipality in 1869. Juankoski was moved to the Muuruvesi parish in 1907, remaining a part of it until Juankoski became a separate municipality in 1923. Säyneinen
Säyneinen is a village and a former municipality of Finland at the time of its existence in the Kuopio Province, now in Northern Savonia. Together with Muuruvesi, it was consolidated with Juankoski in 1971, since 2017 part of Kuopio. Geography The municipality bordered Juankoski, Muuruvesi, Rautavaara, Juuka, Kaavi and Nilsiä. The village of Säyneinen is located between two lakes called ''Suuri-Säyneinen'' and ''Pieni-Säyneinen''. Name The name of Säyneinen comes from the word ''säyne'', referring to the ide, a fairly common fish in Finland. Another municipality named after this fish was Säynätsalo (via the local word ''säynät'') in Central Finland. Unlike the names of most municipalities ending in ''-(i)nen'', the declension of ''Säyneinen'' is in the singular: ''Säyneisen, Säyneisessä'' and not in the plural (''*Säyneisten, *Säyneisissä''). Muuruvesi
Muuruvesi is a village and a former municipality of Finland at the time of its existence in the Kuopio Province, now in Northern Savonia. Together with Säyneinen, it was consolidated with Juankoski in 1971, since 2017 part of Kuopio. Geography The municipality bordered Juankoski, Säyneinen, Nilsiä, Kaavi, Tuusniemi, Riistavesi and Siilinjärvi. Villages History Muuruvesi has existed at least since the 1620s. At the time, it was a part of the Kuopio parish. As Nilsiä became a chapel community under Kuopio in 1769, Muuruvesi was became a part of it. Nilsiä became a separate parish in 1816. A division of the Nilsiä parish was ordered in 1899, splitting Muuruvesi and Varpaisjärvi from it, however Muuruvesi only became a functional parish in 1900 and started producing its own church registers in 1908. Museum Masuuni Brunou
Museum Masuuni Brunou is a museum about the industrial history of Juankoski, Finland . The museum is situated in the old blast furnace building right beside the rapids (now dammed and diverted to produce hydro electricity) and is in the centre of the old foundry milieu. The Juankoski Heritage Society was founded in 1990 to safeguard the cultural and historical heritage of the area. The Museum was opened by the society in 1991 and has displays relating to products of the foundry, local history and the lives of local inhabitants. The museum's name 'Blast furnace Brunou' comes from building's original use and from the name of one of the founders of the foundry, Brynolf Brunou. The main entry hall contains displays about the development from peasant to iron worker as well as the development of the factory from an ironworks to a cardboard mill. Juice Leskinen
Juhani Juice Leskinen (officially Pauli Matti Juhani "Juice" Leskinen; 19 February 1950 – 24 November 2006), better known as Juice Leskinen ( as if the word ''juice'' were Finnish) was one of the most important and successful Finnish singer-songwriters of the late 20th century. From the early 1970s onward he released nearly 30 full-length albums and wrote song lyrics for dozens of other Finnish artists. Several of Leskinen's songs have reached classic status in Finnish popular music, e.g., "Viidestoista yö", "Kaksoiselämää" and "Syksyn sävel". His early records are considered staples of the so-called Manserock movement of the mid-'70s. He also wrote poetry and plays and published nine collections of verse and seven plays. The following is a list of cities in Finland. In the year 1977, the legal difference between towns and municipalities was removed. Today they are all classified as municipalities, some of which are commonly referred to as cities ''(kaupunki'' in Finnish, ''stad'' in Swedish). A municipality can decide whether it calls itself a municipality or a city. but ''suurkaupunki'' (~ large town) is used for a few cities in Finland. This fits the EU's definition of a city, which has the criteria of a minimum population of 50,000 and a minimum population density of 500 inhabitants per square kilometer. A simple, independent decision in the municipal council is sufficient to call a municipality (''kunta'') a city (''kaupunki''). For cities founded before the 1960s, the list includes the year the city was chartered. Eastern Finland
Eastern Finland ( fi, Itä-Suomen lääni, sv, Östra Finlands län) was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2009. It bordered the provinces of Oulu, Western Finland and Southern Finland.
