Juana de Jesús Sarmiento Ariza, better known as Juana de J. Sarmiento (1899-1979) was a Colombian politician and activist, recognized for having been the first elected mayor of a municipality in Colombia. Early life and political career Sarmiento was born in the municipality of Sabanalarga, Atlántico Department Atlántico (, en, Atlantic) is a department of Colombia, located in northern Colombia with the Caribbean Sea to its north, the Bolívar Department to its west and south separated by the Canal del Dique, and the Magdalena Department to its ..., in 1899. She began her political career by participating in the creation and organization of civic committees in the municipality. In the 1930s, she founded a women's organization called Colombia Democrática, also becoming its president. Sabanalarga, Atlántico
Sabanalarga (, Spanish for "Long Plain") is a municipality in the Atlántico Department, Colombia. Founded in 1620 by Lucas Dionisio Tesillo y Diego and Marceliano de Jesús Almanza. It became a municipality in 1680. Geography Sabanalarga is located in the middle of the Atlántico Department. Atlántico (, en, Atlantic) is a department of Colombia, located in northern Colombia with the Caribbean Sea to its north, the Bolívar Department to its west and south separated by the Canal del Dique, and the Magdalena Department to its east separated by the Magdalena River.
