Atlántico Department
Atlántico (, ) is a Departments of Colombia, department of Colombia, located in northern Colombia with the Caribbean Sea to its north, the Bolívar Department to its west and south separated by the Canal del Dique, and the Magdalena Department to its east separated by the Magdalena River. Despite being the third smallest in the country, the department is among the most densely populated, with a population of 2,535,517. The department's capital and most-populous city is Barranquilla with a population of 1,327,209. Soledad, Atlántico, Soledad and Malambo, Atlántico, Malambo are also significant population centers within Atlántico, constituting integral parts of the Barranquilla metropolitan area. Colombia is a unitary state, unitary republic made up of thirty-two administrative divisions referred to as departments (Spanish language, Spanish: ''departamentos'', sing. ) and one Capital District (''Capital districts and territories, Distrito Capital''). Campo de la Cruz (Spanish for "field r countrysideof the cross") is a municipality and a town in the Colombian department of Atlántico. Baranoa
Baranoa is a municipality and city in the colombian department of Atlántico and widely known for being the birth city of the very first documented black president of Colombia, Juan José Nieto Gil. Its geographical location has historically led to the coining of the name "El corazón alegre del Atlántico", ("The happy heart of the Atlantic" in English), since it is located almost exactly in the center of the department. Magdalena River
The Magdalena River (, ; less commonly ) is the main river of Colombia, flowing northward about through the western half of the country. It takes its name from the biblical figure Mary Magdalene. It is navigable through much of its lower reaches, in spite of the shifting sand bars at the mouth of its delta, as far as Honda, at the downstream base of its rapids. Canal Del Dique
The Canal del Dique ( Levee Channel) is a 118 km artificial canal connecting Cartagena Bay (at the corregimiento of Pasacaballos) to the Magdalena River in the Bolívar Department in northern Colombia. The canal is a bifurcation or artificial arm of the Magdalena River, and its eastern portion forms most of the border between the departments of Bolívar and Atlántico. The port on the Magdalena River is Calamar. History The canal was needed since the mouth of the Magdalena River (which provided access into the interior of Colombia) was virtually impenetrable, and Colombia's two main colonial ports ( Cartagena and Santa Marta) had no access to the river.
