Juan Fernandez Pacheco, 5th Duke Of Escalona
Don Juan Fernández Pacheco, (20 December 1563, in Escalona, Spain – 5 May 1615, in Escalona, Spain), 5th Duke of Escalona, 5th Marquis of Villena and 5th Count of Xiquena was a Spanish nobleman and, between 1607 and 1610, viceroy of Sicily. He was the son of Don Francisco Pacheco, 4th Duke of Escalona (1532–1574) and Juana Alvarez de Toledo. In 1589, he was made a knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece. He was Spanish ambassador in Rome between 1603 and 1606, then made viceroy of Sicily between 1607 and 1610. Marriage and children He married in 1594 with Serafina de Bragança (1566-1604), daughter of John I, 6th Duke of Braganza. Escalona is a municipality located in the north part of the province of Toledo, which in turn is part of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. According to the 2017 census ( INE), the municipality has a population of 3,240 inhabitants, most of whom are settled in several housing estates such as Ribera del Alberche, Miragredos or Castillo de Escalona. The town is settled alongside the right side of the river Alberche, in the comarca of Torrijos, which is a part of the historical region of New Castile. Duke of Escalona ( es, Duque de Escalona) is a hereditary title in the Peerage of Spain, accompanied by the dignity of Grandee and granted in 1472 by Henry IV to Juan Pacheco, 1st Marquess of Villena. The Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece ( es, Insigne Orden del Toisón de Oro, german: Orden vom Goldenen Vlies) is a Catholic order of chivalry founded in Bruges by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430, to celebrate his marriage to Isabella of Portugal. Today, two branches of the order exist, namely the Spanish and the Austrian Fleece; the current grand masters are Felipe VI, King of Spain and Karl von Habsburg, head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, respectively. The Grand Chaplain of the Austrian branch is Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna. The separation of the two existing branches took place as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession.
