Jost Bürgi
Jost Bürgi (also ''Joost, Jobst''; Latinisation of names, Latinized surname ''Burgius'' or ''Byrgius''; 28 February 1552 – 31 January 1632), active primarily at the courts in Kassel and Prague, was a Swiss clockmaker, a maker of astronomical instruments and a mathematician. Life Bürgi was born in 1552 Lichtensteig, Toggenburg, at the time a subject territory of the Abbey of St. Gall (now part of the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland). Not much is known about his life or education before his employment as astronomer and clockmaker at the court of William IV in Kassel in 1579; it has been theorized that he acquired his mathematical knowledge at Strasbourg, among others from Swiss mathematician Conrad Dasypodius, but there are no facts to support this. Although an autodidact, he was already during his lifetime considered as one of the most excellent mechanical engineers of his generation. Lichtensteig, Toggenburg
Lichtensteig is a municipality in the ''Wahlkreis'' (constituency) of Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. History Lichtensteig was founded by the counts of Toggenburg in the early 13th century, first mentioned in 1228 as ''Liehtunsteige''. A market is mentioned in 1374, and the right to hold markets is confirmed in 1400. A letter of privileges issued by the lords of Raron 1439 confirms the existence of a council of twelve burghers, and the joint appointment of judges by the burghers and the land lords. The mayor ( Schultheiss) was appointed by the land lord from a list of candidates compiled by the burghers. After the acquisition of the Toggenburg by the Abbey of St. Gallen in 1468, Lichtensteig became the seat of the abbot's reeve. Conrad Dasypodius
Conrad Dasypodius (1532 – 26 April 1600) was a professor of mathematics in Strasbourg, Alsace. He was born in Frauenfeld, Thurgau, Switzerland. His first name was also rendered as Konrad or Conradus or Cunradus, and his last name has been alternatively stated as Rauchfuss, Rauchfuß, and Hasenfratz. He was the son of Petrus Dasypodius (Peter Hasenfuss) (1490–1559, or ''Peter Hasenfratz''), a humanist and lexicographer. In 1564, Dasypodius edited various parts of the ''Elements'' of Euclid. In the preface, he says that for 26 years it had been the rule at his school that all who were promoted from the classes to public lectures should learn Book I of the ''Elements'', but there were no longer any copies to be had so he was bringing out a new edition so as to maintain a good and fruitful regulation of his school. Valentinus Otho
Valentinus Otho (also Valentin Otto; born around 1545–46 possibly in Magdeburg – 8 April 1603 in Heidelberg) was a German mathematician and astronomer. Life In 1573 he came to Wittenberg, proposing to Johannes Praetorius an approximation of pi as \pi \approx \tfrac (now known as '' milü'', as named by its first discover, the Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi). In 1575 he supported Georg Joachim Rheticus in his trigonometric tables. The next year they went to Kaschau in Hungary where Rheticus died. Nicolaus Reimers
Nicolaus Reimers Baer (2 February 1551 – 16 October 1600), also ''Reimarus Ursus'', ''Nicolaus Reimers Bär'' or ''Nicolaus Reymers Baer'', was an astronomer and imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II. Due to his family's background, he was also known as ''Bär'', Latinized to ''Ursus'' ("bear").
