Josias Du Pré
Josias Du Pre (also Du Pré, Dupré or Dupre) (1721–1780) was a London merchant, a director of the East India Company and Governor of Madras. Life Du Pre was born in South Carolina, the son of Cornelius Dupre. He joined the civil service of the East India Company in 1752, as a factor, and rose through a succession of positions. He spent a period in England in the 1760s, and married there. East India Company
The East India Company (EIC) was an English, and later British, joint-stock company founded in 1600 and dissolved in 1874. It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with the East Indies (the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), and later with East Asia. The company seized control of large parts of the Indian subcontinent, colonised parts of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. At its peak, the company was the largest corporation in the world. Sir John Blackwood, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Blackwood, 2nd Baronet (1721 – 27 February 1799) was an Irish politician and baronet. He was the eldest son of Sir Robert Blackwood, 1st Baronet of BallyleidyDebrett, John (1820). Debrett's Peerage of England, Scotland, and Ireland'. 13th ed. pp. 1259–62. Blackwood entered the Irish House of Commons for Killyleagh in 1761 and sat for it until 1768. He was then returned for Bangor until 1776. He was member of parliament for Killyleagh again until 1790 and subsequently for Bangor until 1798. Alexander Wynch
Alexander Wynch (1721 – 1781) was an English merchant, a career civil servant of the East India Company who became Governor of Madras. Life He travelled to India at a young age and began to work, unpaid, for the East India Company at 13. Wynch became governor of Madras in 1773. He was removed as governor in 1775, in the wake of his handling of the affair of Thuljaji, the Rajah of Thanjavur (Tanjore), who in fighting in south India had been dispossessed by Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot. The company disapproved of the change in the previous policy of ensuring the Rajah and Nawab were bound by treaty. Wynch was replaced in 1775 by George Pigot, 1st Baron Pigot, governor some years before, who was sent out from England. In England, Wynch lived in Upper Harley Street in London, and then Gifford Lodge in Twickenham. He died at Westhorpe House in Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire. Charles Bourchier (governor)
Charles Bourchier (died 1810) was an official of the East India Company and was Governor of Madras from 1767 to 1770. Bourchier was the elder son of Richard Bourchier, Governor of Bombay and his wife Sarah Hawkins, daughter of George Hawkins, of Clayhill, Epsom, Surrey. He joined the service of the East India Company. Bourchier was appointed Governor of Madras on 25 January 1767. He held the post until 31 January 1770. Bourchier married Anne Foley, daughter of Thomas Foley, M.P. for Herefordshire, on 6 May 1776. In about 1783 he purchased Colney House at Shenley, Hertfordshire, and built a mansion at a cost of about £53,000. Josias Du Pré Porcher
Josias Du Pré Porcher (''ca.'' 1761 – 4 May 1820) was an English politician. After following his uncle into the service of the British East India Company, he became wealthy and returned to England, although he was frustrated in an attempt to obtain a directorship of the company. His wealth and his friendship with Lord Caledon enabled him to sit in Parliament for various boroughs until 1818, although he was not a particularly conspicuous member. He died at his country home in Devonshire in 1820. Childhood and Indian career Born about 1761, Josias was the third son of Paul Porcher, a planter of Charleston, South Carolina, and his wife Esther Du Pré. Sir Philip Grey Egerton, 10th Baronet
Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton, 10th Baronet FRS (13 November 1806 – 5 April 1881) was an English palaeontologist and Conservative politician from the Egerton family. He sat in the House of Commons variously between 1830 and his death in 1881. Early life Egerton was the son of Sir Philip Grey Egerton, 9th Baronet and his wife Rebecca Du Pre, daughter of Josias Du Pre of Wilton Park, Beaconsfield. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1828. While at college his interest in geology was aroused by the lectures of William Buckland, and by his acquaintance with William D. Conybeare. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1829. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1831, and was a trustee of the British Museum.
