Joseph W. Goodman
Joseph Wilfred Goodman is an American electrical engineer and physicist. Education Goodman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering and applied physics from Harvard University in 1958 and Master of Science and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1960 and 1963, respectively. Career and research Goodman has held a number of positions in the field of optics, including the presidency of the Optical Society of America in 1992. From 1958 through 1962, he was a research assistant in the Stanford Electronics Laboratories. During 1962 and 1963, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment, under the auspices of the Royal Norwegian Society for Scientific and Industrial Research. Optics
Optics is the branch of physics that studies the behaviour and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behaviour of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties. Most optical phenomena can be accounted for by using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces.
