Joseph Srampickal
Joseph Srampickal is an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic bishop. In 2016, he was appointed the first bishop of the Eparchy of Great Britain, which had been erected by Pope Francis the same year. Early life Joseph Srampickal was born on 30 May 1967 in Poovarany, in the Eparchy of Palai. Education He studied philosophy at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, and theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate in biblical theology. He continued his studies at the University of Oxford. Priesthood Ordained a priest on 12 August 2000, he has held the following positions: professor at the minor seminary and Ephrem Formation Centre of Pala, Director of the Mar Sleeva Nursing College, Director of the Evangelization Programme, secretary of the bishop; and pastor at Urulikunnam. Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy Of Great Britain
The Eparchy of Great Britain is the sole Syro-Malabar Catholic Church ecclesiastical territory or eparchy of the Catholic Church in Great Britain. Its cathedral is Syro-Malabar Cathedral of St Alphonsa in the episcopal see of Preston, Lancashire. This eparchy is not part of any ecclesiastical province and is exempt immediately to the Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church and the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. It has jurisdiction over Syro-Malabar Catholics in the entirety of Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales (the United Kingdom minus Northern Ireland). Most of the members of the church are British Indians with heritage in Kerala, where the Syro-Malabar Church is based. The British eparchy, established in 2016, is the church's fourth diocesan jurisdiction outside India, after the eparchies of Mississauga (Canada), Chicago (US) and Melbourne (Australia). George Alencherry ( syr, ܡܵܪܝ ܓܝܼܘܲܪܓܝܼܣ ܐܵܠܲܢܫܝܪܝ, Mar Giwargis Alencherry) is the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and also a Cardinal (Catholic Church), cardinal of the Catholic Church.
