Joseph Messer Clough
Joseph Messer Clough (June 15, 1828 – May 7, 1919) was a Union Army lieutenant colonel during the American Civil War, who was appointed and confirmed to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers in 1866. He attended Norwich University in Vermont. Clough led the City Guard of Manchester, New Hampshire, and was a member of the City Guard at Lowell, Massachusetts. He was a machinist and mill operator before the Civil War. On April 26, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army as a private with the 1st New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, a 90-day regiment, and was soon appointed a lieutenant. Enfield Center is an unincorporated community in the town of Enfield in Grafton County, New Hampshire. It is a separate community from the much larger village of Enfield, which is located in the northern corner of the town. Enfield Center is located, as the name suggests, near the geographic center of the town of Enfield. It lies along New Hampshire Route 4A, about south of the south end of Mascoma Lake and about south of Enfield village. New London, New Hampshire
New London is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,400 at the 2020 census. The town is the home of Colby–Sawyer College. The town center, where 1,266 people resided at the 2020 census, is defined as the New London census-designated place (CDP), and is located on a hilltop along New Hampshire Route 114 north of Route 11 and Interstate 89. History In 1753, the Masonian Proprietors of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, granted the area now called New London as "Heidelberg". Although it appears on some New Hampshire maps, the township was never settled, and the 1753 grant lapsed into default. In 1773, roughly the same area was awarded as the "Alexandria Addition" to a new group of speculators, who had previously been granted the adjacent township of Alexandria. The governor of New Hampshire is the head of government of New Hampshire. The governor is elected during the biennial state general election in November of even-numbered years. New Hampshire is one of only two states, along with bordering Vermont, to hold gubernatorial elections every two years as opposed to every four. Major general (abbreviated MG, maj. gen. and similar) is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of sergeant major general. The disappearance of the "sergeant" in the title explains the apparent confusion of a lieutenant general outranking a major general, whereas a major outranks a lieutenant. In the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth and in the United States, when appointed to a field command, a major general is typically in command of a Division (military), division consisting of around 6,000 to 25,000 troops (several regiments or brigades). It is a two-star general, two-star rank that is subordinate to the rank of lieutenant general and senior to the rank of brigadier or brigadier general.
