1875–1876 New Zealand General Election
The 1875–1876 New Zealand general election was held between 20 December 1875 and 29 January 1876 to elect a total of 88 MPs in 73 electorates to the 6th session of the New Zealand Parliament. The Māori vote was held on 4 and 15 January 1876. A total of 56,471 voters were registered. Background Political parties had not been established yet; this only happened after the 1890 election. The previous parliament had 78 representatives from 72 electorates. The West Coast ( mi, Te Tai Poutini, lit=The Coast of Poutini, the Taniwha) is a regions of New Zealand, region of New Zealand on the west coast of the South Island that is administered by the West Coast Regional Council, and is known co-officially as Te Tai Poutini. Buller (New Zealand Electorate)
Buller is a former New Zealand parliamentary electorate, from 1871 to 1972. It was represented by eleven Members of Parliament. Population centres The 1870 electoral redistribution was undertaken by a parliamentary select committee based on population data from the 1867 New Zealand census. Eight sub-committees were formed, with two members each making decisions for their own province; thus members set their own electorate boundaries. The number of electorates was increased from 61 to 72, and Buller was one of the new electorates. The Buller electorate was created from areas that previously belonged to the and electorates. Settlements located in the initial electorate area were Westport, Inangahua Junction, and Reefton. James Bickerton Fisher
James Bickerton Fisher (2 November 1843 – 23 January 1910) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from the West Coast, New Zealand. Family genealogy Old notes from the Rev Thomas Richard Fisher, James Bickerton Fisher's father, had his family originating in Packington, England, and being related to the Fishers of Packington manor, but they actually lived nearby in Eastcote and Barston and were just cousins to the Fishers of Packington. James Bickerton Fisher's line descended from Thomas Fisher born 1460, the eldest son and heir to Clement Fisher of Eastcote who died circa 1505. Thus Thomas Fisher was elder brother to John Fisher of Packington. Although Thomas Fisher also worked for the king, his descendants focused on farming rather than politics or the military and where not quite as famous or wealthy as their Packington cousins, however they are recorded in historical records as a being a very influential family in both Eastcote and Barston for some 250 years. Eugene O'Conor
Eugene Joseph O'Conor (23 February 1835 – 5 July 1912) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament for the Buller electorate, in the South Island. Private life Born in Ireland in 1835, O'Conor went to Victoria, Australia in 1854, and came to New Zealand in the early 1860s. He was a cattle dealer and storekeeper. O'Conor had 'several useful inventions patented' and lectured on his opinion that Francis Bacon (Baconian theory) was the author of Shakespeare's plays. He was a significant land owner on the West Coast. Member of Parliament O'Conor was a member of the Nelson Provincial Council. From November 1869 to October 1873, he represented the Buller electorate. From May 1874 until the abolition of the Nelson Province in October 1876, he represented the Westport electorate.
